As with many public works projects around St. Barth, the new boardwalk has just been completed in time for the holiday season. I think readers will agree that it's a huge improvement over the wooden walkway that was washed away in a storm last year -

yes, i love the new walk! no cracks for my shoes to get caught in, unlike the old wooden planks. ruined 2 pairs of my heels. definitely a great improvement.

The stone cutters and stone masons on St Barths sure do nice work. Good to see this skill being carried on. Can't wait to go for a stroll.

Very nice. Much more attractive and St Barthy than before. Sixty five days until I get to test it out. Can't wait!

Put me down for old school. I liked the planks.
Let's see how they worked out the drainage...

spoken like someone who actually lives on the water and not just vacations there....and as one who also lives on the water, I agree 100%...give me boards on a boardwalk....drainage is going to be a b**ch..count on that..

but hey, it looks pretty for the pretty people, and thats all which matters - right? :D

I think it looks great....and now I won't be able to loose Bill's car keys down one of the wooden slats!!!

Well, I hope it slopes to the harbor...I don't see any drains, scuppers, anything...

I would like to think a crew of engineers knew what they were designing before investing in such a beautiful walkway.

I guess I can't believe they didn't think of that, but if they didn't, well, it might just be very French.

What's a construction project without a Change Order? Get out the coring tool, add a drain or twenty. If they used the amount of rebar that they should have, bring lots of extra blades.

Looks lovely. I took a stroll down it one night when it was still a work in progress.

I love it! I call it the "baby" quay because it is where dinghies and small boats tie-up. Dan prefers the traditional planks but I agree with Diana---won't have to worry about catching my heels. Progress is good...sometimes.

I checked it out in November...no storm drains...zero...nada....so when a hard tropical rain comes down....the retaining wall will seal and funnel all the water somewhere....my guess is towards the Buccanneer....there is a very good reason that someone centuries ago decided that planks with gaps were the best thing for a dock.....the reason that dock failed in Gustavia is it was built horribly....we have wooden docks up here that have withstood nor easters...ice...rain...storm surges....10 foot tides...and they are still there...

i think it's pretty! very, very pretty...for us pretty people to walk on!!!

...no mikeR's allowed!!! :p

Barely perceptible in the original photo, perhaps the closeup below will show better the incline provided for drainage of the new walkway -
