We’ve been renting from Turbe for at least 10 years and have never had a problem. The cars are always in good condition and they give a discount to repeat clients. We are here now and have one of their cars.

I also rent from turbe. Two years ago I had to leave midway through my stay due to covid. They kept my credit for 2 years and gave me a 15% discount for a repeat renter that I am using now. With that said I also had some minor damage to the car 2 years ago (scratches, ding from someone opening their door onto my car) and they were very diligent going over the car on its return. They ended up charging me $1000 for repairs!!!! Not happy but thank goodness my cc company ended up paying.

We have been renting from Turbe for several years and currently have one of their cars. When we arrived they had our arrival/departure dates wrong, saw their mistake and made thing rights. The cars are clean and have worked well. The return customer discount is a plus.

I would not recommend Turbe. Not a bad experience per se, there are just other companies that are better. When i was there in February, the car i received looked like it had been in Ukraine the last two weeks. That's not really a big deal, as alot of cars on the island are banged up. But this one was really beat up. The issue i had is i rented the car (paid) at 9am on Saturday, returned it at 10am on Wednesday and they sent me a separate charge the day after i got back to the states, for one additional day. IMO, if you give someone a beat to hell car and they only go one extra hour, into a new 24-hour period, you should probably just let it go. I'm sure everyone in here will strongly disagree with me as usual, but that's just my opinion.

In all honesty the best customer service for cars on the island, is hands down COOL RENTAL. I popped a tire and got stuck going up a hill to my villa on a single trip and the owner lady came out to help me and didn't charge me a dime. Such a friendly company that does everything they can to make sure you aren't stressed.

Interesting. I’ve never heard of “Cool Rental.” From photos, it looks like they only have Mokes. Following is from a website about the business:
Cool Rentals is a division of AGL INDUSTRIES. Cool Rental's objective is to redefine the word service, marrying a car rental company with personalized service. All our cars are equip with Mobil phones and their local number which enables you to be called with out any surplus charges. The phones have been pre programmed with all the useful numbers for hotels, restaurants, shops, activities and emergency numbers , Your CD player in compatible with any type of MP3 player, as well as IPOD connection. The latest CD from our friends NIKKI BEACH has also been made available in the car.”

Yes, apologize for not being clear. I rented a Moke and it's something everyone should do once. Would i do it again, absolutely not, but everyone should try it for one of their trips.

Any experience with Soleil Carribe? Am a very long time customer but the last several years they've been charging for every tiny gravel ding and minor scratch. Maybe that's the way of the world these days...

I agree after the ownership changed the service went downhill and we switched to Turbe.

We have used Turbe for a number of years and found them to be great to work with.

Next trip we are bringing friends who are newbies and were thinking about getting a moke. We will also get another vehicle. Would love to hear more about those who have rented them.

Moke:

Do not do this if your villa is located up steep slope. Add in a steep slope and narrow road and you have a recipe for disaster. If you ever come to a situation where either you or the other driver has to back track, absolutely do not defer.

I want to throw in a vote for TopLoc . . . my long time go-to agency. Arnaud & team are outstanding!

Seems crazy given all the steep roads. Re not deferring, do you mean that its impossible to back up?

Maybe we'll just do it for a day....

There is a considerable lag when engaging the gas from an uphill traffic stop. Can be nervy when you roll back before accelerating. Separately, on narrow roads that access Villas in the hills, you can get caught in a situation where you have to pull off to the side or back up for a while before you find a spot to gain clearance for the oncoming car. This can create a situation where you back into a ditch because the transmission is not very engaging due to the lack of power of Mokes. I would not rent one of these if I was staying in Vitet, the hills of St Jean, etc. Perfect little ride for a beach Villa. Also getting over the mountain from Lorient to lets say Grand Fond the thing pretty much maxes out.

Do you ever wonder why people find the things you say so disagreeable? Asking for a friend.

It’s funny to be portraying Mokes in such a light in view of my recollection of them at a time when they were the only rental vehicles available on the island. Certainly in the 70s & very early 80s, there weren’t really alternative vehicles . . . and Mokes made it up & down the steepest of hills. I remember, for example, how the road from Saline up to Lurin turned, at the steepest part, into a deeply-rutted, one lane dirt “road” that was particularly fraught when it rained & the roadway became muddy. Much the same on the Camaruche hill . . . whether dry or wet!

I believe the new Mokes are Mokes in name only.

yes and the old Mokes were stick shift only, with double clutch to get into reverse.. much better for getting up hills than the new automatic or electric models...
