This incredibly moving story is about a lifelong friendship between two girls who become best friends when their paths cross at seven years of age in 1950. The action takes place mostly in Iran with all its political turmoil, upheavals, and hardships. This is a story of the suffering that women have endured because they are women in a strictly pstriarchal society. The characters grow up and one, Homa, can not tolerate being a second class citizen.. Homs is a believer in freedom of choice and women’s rights and embraces Communism as her goal and the path to gain equality. She is strong and she never gives up believing in the value of education, voting rights, and career opportunities.

The turmoil of coming of age is shared with her dearest friend Ellie, a much more privileged girl from a totally different background. As they grow and suffer for their beliefs and take different paths in life I was in awe of how they never forget what they had as little girls and manage to carry that bond of undying friendship in their hearts as they struggle to survive and live in freedom.
