Remembering Chez Gus

Chrome Hearts is very hot and hip American lifestyle company and luxury (expensive!) brand from Hollywood, producing silver, gold, and diamond accessories, alongside eyewear, leather items, apparel, furniture, kitchenware, and miscellaneous other items, using leather, silver, and ebony. They have a row of stores on the upper road in Gustavia...
The owners also have a very large villa here from what I heard.

. . . being neither Hot nor Hip (just ask the doormen at Le Café and Pablo!), it's not surprising that I don't know Chrome Hearts!

The owners also have a very large villa here from what I heard.
From AI:
Richard and Laurie Lynn Stark are the co-owners and founders of the Los Angeles-based luxury brand Chrome Hearts, renowned for its high-end gothic jewelry, leather goods, and clothing. Founded in the late 1980s by Richard Stark and partners, the brand grew under the creative direction of Richard and Laurie Lynn into a rock 'n' roll lifestyle empire.
Chrome Hearts owners Richard and Laurie Lynn Stark maintain a private home in St. Barts, reflecting their signature blend of rock-and-roll, luxury, and relaxed design.

ask the Stark's for how many decades they have maintained a villa and presence on Saint-Barth 😎
. . . or for how many years they will be around!

In historical perspective, I am blessed in having enjoyed great mentoring on SBH — starting with the memorably special Brook Lacour, who co-founded Sibarth with husband Roget (a/k/a as “Roger”). In different ways, they nurtured my understanding of island customs & conventions & “schooled” me in local real estate . . . until so much changed in what I call “the invasion of the barbarians.” Late 80s / early 90s.

Among the team contributing to bringing tourism to SBH at the time was the forever gracious, charming, exuberant, & “bigger-than-life” Tim Warburton, brother-in-law to Brook & co-founder of WIMCO. (RIP Tim, tragically a Covid victim.). Sweet, hardworking, reliable team members in those years included folks who still prominently serve hospitality on the island — I’m particularly thinking of the indomitable Anne Dentel (now Eden Rock Villas). always refined & gracious Isabelle (Jamin) Giraud (Heavenly Travel SBH), & my longtime ”girlfriend,” Bethany Ludwig (PropCo).

I could go on, but it’s not the time or place (please forgive my nostalgic interval). Suffice it to say that I gather that the Starks are great entrepreneurs of the island, & I wholeheartedly wish success for them. Cass’s comment, nonetheless, triggered for me thoughts of the past & future of our “Treasured Island” (merci MichaelG!).

Avec optimisme pour l'avenir!

What is “Chrome Hearts?”
Home to the $2,200 (or more) toilet bowl plunger. It has led to a few jokes from my husband every time we drive by… although we did meet Richard Stark in LA maybe 20yrs ago when he was adventuring into eyeglass frame design from his other clothing stuff and we do still have that original pair of sunglasses. Small world to see them here years later. They (the Starks) put on the Art for Oceans event a few years back. Another interesting experience…Not sure what the internet would “say” but times sure have changed in the Chrome Hearts world. They have a lot of investments on the island.

I did have to pass on the jewel-studded hand saw and pliers for my husband’s Christmas gift. New drill bits from Alma went over better with the budget. I think I saved €10K (not kidding…check out the retail on these items…) It’s an interesting store with unique items and price tags plus clothing on the downstairs level. It’s art. It speaks to everyone differently…

On one of our strolls thru Gustavia in December of 2025 we talked to the people who were setting up stuff in the former location of CG.They confirmed that the place was bought by somebody, but refused to divulge the new owners name. They also confirmed that for time it will be private dining room, but it will be opened as a normal restaurant somewhere in December of 2026 or around it.
