RATS!

C'est tous les deux, n'est-ce pas?

OK, Peter, I'll check them out at Fred's. We'll be staying at the other end of the island but I'm sure we'll get to Cruz Bay often. Shouldn't you be playing with them now? Priorities, man!

I wish!! I was never in the band, but after years of going to St John and seeing them play i got friendly with a couple of the guys..They would let me play 1 song with them at the end of the night...I was mostly drunk by then, but it didnt matter,i wasnt very good anyway..LOL..They sell CD's too,go to the local music store and ask if they have any..They are unbelievable.

<<Maybe the leadership just needs to stratetically introduce a "superior" non native predator>>

There are no feral cats on SBH?

I have been told that they have "rounded up" the feral cats on a periodic basis. Seemed like there was a time several years ago when there were cats absolutely everywhere. Maybe that is a contributing factor.

Rats?

Of all the things to discuss about St Barts.

Can we now move on to Dengue fever, dangerous drivers and break ins?

I have heard this site referred to locally as "The Misery Site"

Well if you only want the "Shangri La/Utopia" info there are a myriad of sites
that offer that kind of tourism info.

For us, we work very hard all year (or 2) to be able to experience the island and I want to know who the deadbeat or great owners of rental property are, how to avoid Dengue (which if you asked an agency they would deny existed), who is a trusted agency to work with, which car place tries to rip you off for alleged dings on a 10 year old vehicle that the bumper was zipper tied on when you picked it up, etc. Basically the good, the bad and the ugly.

BTW, I was told by a SBP rep that there was not a rat problem on the island. This was after I experienced them running across our villas deck and found droppings all over the kitchen counters (and we keep ALL food in the fridge).

People who live there KNOW there is a rat issue. After all it is a tropical island!!!

This site may seem to be excessively negative at times but if we want all happy news we can go to the French Chamber of Commerce equivalent and get that.

For now, the users of this site are enjoying Freedom of Speech!

When we are no longer allowed to express our opinions and post our experiences this will just be yet another tourism forum of little true value.

I suppose you are right if there is no distinction between freedom of speach and joyfully revelling in the macabre.

As a full time resident of the island I was blissfully unaware of a rat infestation until logging onto this site today.

There are rats, but as far as I know there are rats pretty much wherever there is human habitation.

Yes, people everywhere should take care of how they dispose of their trash.

Can't think of the last time I saw one.....not recently and I don't recall a client ever mentioning them.

But if we want to get hysterical over subjects that aren't even topics of casual conversation on the island, that is an option to be taken.

Freedom of speach...there you go.

Rat A Tuer

Jim,

Thank goodness you came on line; I was beginning to think you'd deserted us. Also, you've inspired me not just to whine about the problem but to propose a positive solution.

I would be happy to contribute to a fund that would pay a bounty on every dead rat delivered to the collection point, and I think others would be as well. Just think what a great activity this would be for the island's teenagers, and they could definitely benefit from something positive to do now that Omar destroyed the basketball court. The biggest problem might be finding some organization or business to serve as the collection point for all the rat carcasses. I think we should look for a group with the following traits:

1. Central location with easy access, maybe some place near the airport.

2. An organization that has demonstrated its civic mindedness and willingness to get involved for the good of the island.

3. An organization with ties to tourism that could relate to the economic benefits of rat reduction.

Mon ami, can you think of such a group that we might contact to determine their interest? In America-speak, this would be called a win, win, win proposition. BTW, my French is probably incorrect, but how do you like the proposed name?

Also, to proceed to something on a lighter note, can you please respond to GEOGONZ's post about the drug bust. I know what I've heard, but I'd like another source to address it.

:)

Re: Rat A Tuer

If there was a need for a rat initiative, I would be the first to support it. However there isn't, beyond people being responsible with their trash.

That said, I do have a community based project in mind, more to follow when it is developed a little further.

Re: Rat A Tuer

put a furry bushy tail on em, and voila

no more rats...now you got squirrels..

problem solved

I see rats almost every day in and around my alley...but I don't think I have a rat "problem". A little better from now until April...snow and freezing temps keep the bastards at bay...

my garage is not used as a garage..it is used as a wood shed and as a root cellar for squash and apple storage....I set mouse traps all fall/winter long, starting when I put the apples and squash in the room, around mid October....I have gone through 20 traps so far....

and I own two cats...two....useless... cats
