Set in modern day China.
This is the story of a poor family from poor freezing Northeast China near Russia. It is the story of a piano prodigy, his bond with and his love for his mother and the piano.
As an infant his mother sang to him. She took him everywhere and was lucky enough to get a job as a cleaner. Then, as a toddler he hears her strike a note on the piano she was dusting. He says I see red. The next note yellow, the next he says blue. Sound as colors! Then he starts to sing the sounds. Then he starts to touch the piano…twinkle twinkle little star. A song she often sang to him.
She is told to get him to a teacher. She looks and they all tell her at 3 he is too young. At last, teacher #25 says bring this child to me. And he gives him lessons and launches a young boy who is a remarkably talented pianist. The struggles and relationships are well described. Though the son and mother become accidentally separated they never stop looking for each other. He has the good luck to get passed to teachers and caring people. She does all she can to find him in Beijing. She works and scrapes by. Covid lockdowns make the search harder for her. She gets a job as a food deliverer and gets a scooter to search the city for him.
I could not put it down. A story of overcoming hardship, stage fright, and Chinese poverty. A beautiful story of a mother and son who never give up on each other.
