Fresh Fish/Outdoor Dining

I clicked on "Restaurant Reviews" and all the names of restaurants come up. But, what I'd like to know is what are some incredible fresh-fish restaurants where one can dine outdoors? In your recommendation(s) what kind of fish/seafood?

Most of the restaurants are open to the outside (with covered ceilings. Most have good fish. La Langouste for lobster. We have had good/great fish at Le Gaiac, Wall House, La Gloriette, L'Esprit de Saline, Eden Rock, to name a few.

In addition to the above and many others, Pipiri Restaurant in Gustavia has a fabulous fresh grilled whole red snapper which is served with creole sauce. It's very good but call ahead to make sure they will offer it. It usually can be split between 2-4 people depending on the size of the fish. Pipiri technically has indoor and outdoor seating areas but the whole restaurant is open air as are most of the restaurants in St. Barth.

Mahi-Mahi seems to predominate on the island menus. Sometimes Yellow Tail Snapper when it is fresh. Second Cheri's comments regarding the snapper at Pipiri Palace. Outstanding! Great lobster too!

While La Marine is know for le moules en mercredi et jeudi, the fish is great there too AND if it is not too windy they do outside tables on the harbor!! On of the best value places on the island.

I second La Marine and would also add Esprit Salines...I have a Trip Report from April and wrote it still very much under the influence...of St. Barths... describing many a fresh fish selection in detail...looking back am suprised I did not describe what we were wearing...it may be helpful. I also think you would enjoy Wall House on Gustavia Harbor.

Enjoy!

I vote for the grouper in vanilla sauce at Eddy's, the lobster and avocado salade at La Langouste, the salt-baked Dover sole for two at La Plage and the anything-at-all at Wall House -- all outdoors or outdoorsy, anyway.

Great, now I'm hungry again ... (and no, Mike R, a cheesesteak just won't cut it ... unless Pat's and Geno's start serving Marius Specials! ;)

I. I also think you would enjoy Wall House on Gustavia Harbor.

Enjoy!
I second that! Not usually outdoors (sometimes Denis sets small tables right on the water), but close enough as it is open air and on the harbor. The fish is cooked on a vertical rotisserie and is always excellent.

"...I'd kill for a Genos cheese steak ....."

If you want I'll email you the recipe but of course won't have the old grease that Geno's has.

yeah and all the wind driven sand you will ingest while eating that fish on the beach will help with digestion too..........

Oops, I forgot, Le Rivage on Grand Cul de Sac has an incredible lobster salad. We have gone there our first night on the island our last two trips. The restaurant is on the beach and with the breezes blowing, it puts us in the island mood instantly. We also really like La Marine. It's very casual. I've had very good lobster there as well as grilled fish. The owner/manager/server/bartender (one woman show last time we were there) couldn't be nicer.

The wine washes it down. But for those not wanting to rough it, there is always Nikki Beach at St Jean.

Mike -- I still say Jim's on South Street is better, Cheez Wiz and all ... ;-)
Just had a soft pretzel for lunch (Atkins Diet be damned). Licked off all the rock salt first ...

And I second that endoresement for the lobster salad at Le Rivage -- or try the paper-thin smoked salmon with capers in the center of the massive plate. Great lunchtime treat!

Sandy... oh man...you re making me hungry again and I just had lunch....you take that big ol soft pretzel and break it in half and half gets hot spicy brown mustard spread on it...and half gets nutella....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

heres a different outdoor fish eating suggestion that will probably go over like a fart in church to most, because it involves cooking it yourself...but anyway..for those few who actually enjoy cooking in St Barts......I present

* get a fresh mahi mahi from the guy who sells them in front of Match and Select every Thursday....insist on a loin piece

* get some fresh dill, tarragon ,oregano, rosemary and basil ( all or a few - depending on what you like and/or whats available) from Match.. ( yes they have it )....and capers too

* bring it all home...make up a lemon/butter/garlic/white wine sauce....baste it on the fish.....salt and pepper to taste...lay the fish on heavy duty tin foil..throw the fresh herbs and capers both on top and at the bottom of the fish, and close it up tight...real tight....throw it on a hot hot hot grill...wait until steam is coming out of the foil...then take it off - its done....most people overcook fish...dont be one of them

* serve it with some fresh sauteed Guadolupe Zuccini with sweet onions and either a yellow or red pepper ( in extra virgin Olive Oil and garlic) and a nice cold lentil and tomato salad or a chantral mushroom rissoto, and a big honkin loaf of a multigrain rustic bread from Petit Colombe

* Pouilly Fume is the wine

* Chocoloate Cream Puffs from Petit Colombe, along with Coffee and Bailys, is the desert

Bon Appetit!!!

WOW! Mike, you're hired! When can you fly out here? ;-)

Talk about hungry ... now I'm famished! The husby and I pretended we were going to grill all this fresh fish at our villas, both with nicely equipped kitchens and very large barby grills. But we did something really terrible to that salmon during the first week, ya know, with that jarred store-bought tomato gravy, and so we ran back to the restaurants -- until the second attempt, when we were too drunk and poured champagne into the pasta.

I guess we should have waited 'til the food was ready to hit the wine ... ;-)
