Picked this up because of the cover photo. Elephants? Well, I like their matriarchal society. It is also a WWII story. Locale is Burma. My ear worm for days was ON THE ROAD TO MANDALAY. We meet the real people WHO WORK WITH THE ELEPHANTS AS CAREGIVERS AND TRAINERS and the British leader who assemble a unit of these special animals to build bridges and help PREVENT the Japanese from overrunning the allied army trails to India through Burma.
This man learns Burmese, becomes an elephant whisperer, and lives with and trains hundreds of these animals. He is hired originally to bring teak logs out of the jungle. The culture, the jungle climate, and the people who work to prepare these magnificent animals for war work and dangerous missions made for a fascinating look at a whole brand new to me war zone and lesson in world history.
