Eating my way around the island

Every time we visit, - usually 8-10 days - I make a restaurant "hit list" beforehand. We dine at about 50% of them.
Obviously, we need to rent for a month.....

And that’s how it starts. A week, then bracket two weekends, then two weeks and add on days from year to year and add more frequent visits. It sure as hell worked for Phil and me. Good luck as you expand your time on island.

You will get the same results.

This is so true. One of the issues I have is that I can’t eat two large meals a day. I try to limit myself to one meal a day out. So even though I’ve been here for weeks, there are places I haven’t gotten to. Like Amy says, so many places, so little time.

A friend of mine has joined me this week. Having a buddy has just encouraged more over eating. Since we have been busy talking and catching up over drinks and meals, I haven’t bothered taking pictures. But I wanted to note some highlights. Dinner at Papillon Ivre was spectacular. At one point the waitress came out with a bowling ball sized golden orb. She asked if we would like some French butter. After a vigorous nodding of our heads, she used a spoon to take shavings of some of the best butter I’ve ever tasted off the orb and deposit it on our plates. It was amazing stuff. Cocktails at Eden Rock were great. Such a posh setting. My friend was busy taking pictures to send to his very jealous wife. Back to Mapo for dinner this time. Great eggplant fritters. Maybe my favorite vegetable. Done tempura style. Very tasty. Then duck. The duck was phenomenal. Very rare and tender. Highly recommend this place.

Another great report! Thanks for taking us along on your visit. I’m especially happy to read of your enjoyment of Mapo . . . its young owners are lovely & concerned restaurateurs.

La Casina was on the menu for last night. It was pouring rain when we arrived but the huge artificial lemon tree in the center really brightened up the room.

Started with the polpette. Maybe a bit overcooked but very flavorful. Sauce was so good I wanted to pick up the bowl and lick it clean.

Then the main of filet with foie gras Rossini which was a special for the night. A killer dish, spectacular, I can’t say enough good things about it. Meat was cooked just right and the foie! Oh my the foie! The sauce! This dish alone may be one of the best things I’ve eaten on the island in many many trips.

Service was warm and inviting. Talked with Jean Phillipe and if I recall her name correctly his wife Catherine. They were so welcoming. Sent us glasses of their home made limoncello. Such a wonderful evening. Maybe my new first night dinner spot. I read some earlier reviews that were mixed. They have been open since October. Maybe it took some time to get their stride together but it’s humming along now.

Oh Ellen, no more singing with the pasta!

Looks delicious - you stumbled on a great special!
I wonder when they stopped singing with the pasta -- they played the song three times when we dined there three weeks ago!

Happy to read this very positive report! I’ll be there again, soon.

As a wife that often stays home while hubs travels the world, this one hurts!!! Receiving pics from SBH without me there would be PURE torture! 😂

Same here. I can't eat a nice lazy lunch and be hungry by dinner time. I need to change my strategy!

I’ve been posting less as my time has gone on and I’ve become lazier. Wanted to add a few more things before I leave.

Went back to La Casina. This time on my own. I sat at the bar and talked with the bartender, Tony. He makes a great well balanced mojito. Not too sweet.

Had a nice little salad then the calzone. Huge. I thought to myself first and then told Mathis that there was no way I would finish it. Maybe half.

IMG_6669.jpeg

Of course I finished it. The crust had such good flavor. Chewy and with a slight tang of sourdough. I waddled out into the sultry evening afterwards.

A quick lunch back at Bouchon which may be my favorite low key causal locals mostly place. Magret de canard. So much that I wasn’t hungry at dinner time and so went right to an eclair I had picked up from Choisy.

Time to go home and stop eating for a while.
