Dinner timing?

With all due respect, I have never seen a chicken fried steak and can't imagine why you would fry a perfectly good steak? Nothing against it as I have never encountered one, but as a committed meatatarian, I am a little confused.
The "steak" part is a bit of a euphemism for a mechanically tenderized piece cut from the shoe leather section of the carcass 🤓

I have never seen a chicken fried steak

That is such a sad thing. It’s one of my favorite things in the world. Given the choice between the chicken fried steak at the long lost Cottonwood Cafe in the west village in NYC and the porterhouse for two at any place like Keen’s, Luger, Sparks, et al, I would pick CFS.

Tim Hayward who was the long time critic for the FT wrote a lovely piece on it. He wrote the book on steak. Literally.

I’d go with 7:00–7:30 for a group—best balance overall.

You’ll catch the sunset, get more attentive service, and avoid the big kitchen rush that usually hits around 8–8:30 when everyone orders at once . Plus, dinner in St. Barth typically starts around 7, with peak times later in the evening .

If you want more of a lively/party vibe, then the 9–9:30 seating is better—but for a group trip, earlier is just smoother and more relaxed 👍

where I grew up, we like our steak well done. chicken fried makes it quite tender. guess you had to grow up in the south to appreciate it. however we do cook our veggies too long. the green beans esp., I have outgrown that.

Best Cut of Beef for Chicken-Fried Steak

The best cut of beef for chicken-fried steak is cube steak, or another steak variety that has already been tenderized. This recipe, like most others you'll find on the internet, calls for cube steak.

I do love many foods from the South, so I will definitely try the fried steak at some point. But give me some good cornbread and bbq and I could be happy anywhere as long as the sauce is sweet😋😋. (Sorry, NC and SC friends..I really did try to like the vinegar sauce while on the old “ college tour” with Dave!)
