CASTAWAYS ON A FRENCH ISLE Published: March 31, 1985

So to a sensitive question, which French-speaking islands in the Caribbean still most closely resemble that 1985 description of SB? Any thoughts?

The only island I can think of which remains undeveloped is Marie-Galante. Definitely a relax atmosphere and old-fashioned Caribbean. No, there is no Nikki Beach or Bagatelle, and restaurants are mostly local but you will find authenticity, plenty of nature and extremely laid-back people. No road traffic, no Pilatus noise at the airport and no construction site next to your villa.

Beaches are stunning, particularly on the North shore, and totally empty! They also produce the best rum in the French Caribbean.

Islander, thank you so much. We won't tell a soul. Thirty-five years too late for SB, but perhaps not too late to experience a French Caribbean island pre-discovery. With international travel having reached a fever pitch over the last 30 years, it seems it's not so much where you've been, but more importantly when did you go, pre- or post- development?

What a great article. Cheryl and I honeymooned there in 1987. This article describes my feelings perfectly. I had one of my most memorable meals at Au Port, lamb medallions overlooking the harbor before the postoffice was built. The ambiance has brought our bodies and hearts back repeatedly.
