Brady out 4 games

My question is ..........

if the NFL knew about alleged Patriot ball tampering before the Indy game, as they are claiming .......why not, for the good of the game, approach the Patriot organization before the game and verbalize their concerns?.......rather than do what appears to be a grudge fueled sting operation, which of course creates one more black mark on the same integrity of the game they are claiming to be concerned about?

The Wells report describes what went on with emails being passed on without real action in the NFL offices.. Ted Wells speaking today has essentially confirmed the impression one gets from this part of the report saying "no one at the league office took the complaints seriously", which may be understandable in that game officials have not typically attached high priority to the precise measurement of ball inflation... the NFL approach in this matter may be a classic case of "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"... maybe with the added caveat often attributed to Einstein "but don't rule out malice"...

In the end, I don't think any of the major players in this saga are going to come out well - the NFL has acted like the NFL often does, the report has major issues, and the Patriots and Tom Brady brought this on themselves... This piece from the Washington Post addresses the roles of each...

So what do they now do with Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning, both of him have openly admitted they have overinflated their game balls?

Aaron Rodgers has been quoted as saying "I like to push the limit to how much air we can put in the football, even go over what they allow you to do and see if the officials take air out of it". The Patriots Jim McNally (aka"The Deflator") is alleged/believed to have taken air out of the balls after the officials had inspected and approved them when he visited a rest room after removing the balls from the Officials Locker Room "without the permission of the referee or another game official (which) was a breach of the standard operating pre-game procedure".

NFL playing Rule 2 states

"Referee shall be the sole judge as to whether all balls offered for play comply with... specifications... and the balls shall remain under the supervision of the Referee until they are delivered to the ball attendant just prior to the start of the game"

.

Yes but you are assuming the refs catch it before every game with Rodgers.....highly unlikely.....so if an overinflated ball slipped through just once.....then Rodgers cheated....period .....and he should get the same penalty Brady got .....Manning too

I am not assuming anything in this regard just relaying what Rodgers is quoted as saying and what the Patriots Jim McNally (aka"The Deflator") is alleged/believed to have done with Brady's "general awareness". I do not believe the Wells report uses the word "cheat" in any of its conclusions, btw. It is up to the NFL to determine what constitutes a punishable violation of NFL playing Rule 2. In regard to Aaron Rodgers, the question would be does what he describes constitute a violation of the rule:

Aaron Rodgers quoted as saying "I like to push the limit to how much air we can put in the football, even go over what they allow you to do and see if the officials take air out of it."

NFL playing Rule 2: "Referee shall be the sole judge as to whether all balls offered for play comply with... specifications... and the balls shall remain under the supervision of the Referee until they are delivered to the ball attendant just prior to the start of the game"

I have not seen the direct or second hand quote from Peyton Manning but it would need to be assessed in regard to whether he was describing a violation of NFL rules.

Lost in all this is what becomes clear from reading the report and NFL letters and listening to Ted Wells today is that the ball inflation itself is not the big issue that got the Patriots and Brady where they are.

This will be negotiated down.......too many holes

and BTW Aaron Rodgers blew away an astronaut and Shark Tanks Kevin O Leary in celebrity Jeopardy tonight.....I don't believe he cheated though

Your over zealous defense of the Patriots is only matched by your over zealous disdain for the Cowboys!

"Grudge fueled sting operation"? Who has the grudge? Are you saying the NFL is trying to bring down one of the most popular teams and one of the most popular QBs? That helps them how?

Or is Jerry Jones behind it all? :devillaugh:

Mr. Wonderful is a blowhard. Rodgers was clearly the best of the 3.

Bart....read the Washington Post article.....the writer suggested that not me....I was simply agreeing it could bE possible....

and I think I've been crystal clear that my issue is with the NFL system of justice ,not defending the Patriots ....I would feel the same way regardless of what team was being victimized by an NFL witch hunt

As it now stands, the only NFC East team that the Pats would face without Brady is the Cowboys... the week before he would return to play against the Colts for a national TV Sunday night game.. random NFL scheduling, perhaps...

You may remember, or not since I'm not up with you and your many thousands of posts posters, that I am a life long Eagles fan, grew up in Philly, went to Tony Mart's at the Jersey Shore, am a Phillies and Big Five fan. I picked Villanova to beat UConn two years ago in the NCAA regionals and love soft pretzels with mustard. So for you to intimate that residing in a region is reason enough fors anyone to disregard a wrong is rediculous. The likelihood that the Brady is involved is not an absolute and the other side of the matter is that it's also likely that he wasn't involved. My take is that the NFL has made another arbitrary and capricious judgement that is simply wrong. I'm not suprised nor am I disappointed. It just doesn't matter that much. It's just that it's ridiculous and wrong,

 Please have a pretzel for me. No mustard, merci. Salt, oui. (Native NYer. Have mercy.) Phil Mickelson is a Big Five fan. You are in good company, or he in yours. Enjoy!

Hey Goldy- enough with that soft pretzel nonsense. It's not where you're from , it's where you're at now. Check your Avatar pal. Here is the NYT link that JEK posted\http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/12/s...is-a-matter-of-perspective.html?emc=eta1&_r=0

So you're suggesting that folks currently residing in the "northeast" and are life long any team other than the Patriots fans are outraged due to this absurd punishment? And this is based on current regional bias?

You're delusional! Again, it's simply a matter of a punishment from the NFL that is no where near to the severity of the possible crime. Not the absolutely convinced of the crime, the likelihood of the crime.

And Bill Bergey never ingested performance enhancers of any type.

You're just proving again that as a New Englander you think the Pats walk on water. What I'm reading from you and Mike is that other teams cheat so what's the problem. Ridiculous. And Bergey sniffed laughing gas before each game- just listen to him talk. :uncomfortableness:

Ok let's be clear here....

one more time

1. I absolutely do NOT think the Pats walk on water
2. I do admire TB as a QB and BK as an owner however
3. i am totally focused on the buffoonery that is the NFL system of accountability here...not defending TB....I have no clue what he did or did not do because I haven't been given ENOUGH CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE to decide either way!
4. The only reason I bring up the others cheating is to bring to light this inconsistent and random style the NFL is with all this....not because I think if everyone does it it's ok.....my feelings are either bust EVERYONE or leave them all alone.....one or the other

ok?

Of the hundreds of hours I have spent at NIKE clinics listening to some great coaches pontificate on this and that.....one of the most profound yet simple pieces of advice I got was from Coach K when he told the class:

"never create a rule you re not capable of enforcing effectively and fairly all the time.....it will make you look weak, disorganized, and out of control"

smart man.....The NFL could use some of that
