Birthday Dinner in St. Barths?

Any suggestions as to where to have dinner for my birthday on Sunday, January 27, 2013? First time on Island and want to make sure I celebrate in a memorable fashion.

If you want a more upscale birthday dinner then any of the large hotel restaurants would work, with On The Rocks at Eden Rock, Le Gaiac at Le Toiny being the first two to come to mind.

Some would suggest Maya's as a good spot to celebrate a birthday.

I've done the over-the-top birthday enough times that it no longer appeals to me. These days, I celebrate my birthdays at Santa Fe in Lurin.

Right on, Kevin. There are plenty of fancy or chic places to celebrate, but there is no where like Santa Fe for the food and the hospitality. Favorite restaurant on the planet.

I agree with Kevin as well! We did an over the top birthday dinner once. But it wasn't the most memorable--- we stick with our lower key favorites, and our most-often hit spots. If it were me or Tom, I think we would both choose La Plage. Our personal favorite for casual, chic beach vibe, excellent and personal service, and of course the food is great. Le Repaire or Wall House, same, but harbor side. So many to choose from!

Okay. Low key and memorable it will be. I hear raves about Santa Fe. Any comments?

If Manu has the veal stew as the special, don't hesitate to order! It is fantastic! Then again his whole menu is the best so you can't go wrong with anything. Just check out Phil and Amy's food pics and you will be drooling in a second.

Happy Birthday early.

Charlotte

Wall House would certainly be a suitable place for a birthday dinner. The ambiance alone would make it memorable on any vacation, more so on a short stay such as this.

As to Santa Fe, the menu is a combination of classic French and Caribbean cuisine. I must admit that I'm partial to the Blanquette de Veau, the Veal dish that Charlotte mentioned, which is sometimes available as a special.

Santa Fe or Wall House are both great choices. Let them know when making a reservation that its a birthday and I know it will even be more memorable.

Santa Fe is great, but this is a birthday. Go to Eden Rock. Food is amazing, service is perfect. You get the beauty of the island with the comfort of service that comes close to Michelin standard. Before or after you can have a great walk along the beach.

Go to Santa Fe an afternoon after a trip to the beach. It is a wonderful place. You can go in a mess, with too much sand on you and you are treated well. Food is wonderful.

For what it is worth --- there is no great reason not to do both on that day. A trip to Gouv. in the morning. Early afternoon, head up to Santa Fe for a meal. Late that evening, head to the Rock. Arrange a taxi in advance and sit for a long time enjoying dinner and the nice wine list.

The Wall House (www.wallhouserestaurant.com) has a very lovely setting on the harbor and the food is excellent.

Santa Fe has a spectacular daytime view and I believe serves the same menu during the day and night. The steep and dark drive to Sante Fe can be challenging and a little scary at night IMHO.

I have not seen consistently positive reviews for On the Rocks over the last several seasons since Jean-Claude Dufour left. Go to the Eden Rock for a before or after drink and enjoy the storybook setting. Jean-Claude opened a new restaurant last year called L'Esprit Jean-Claude which has received consistently oustanding reviews for lunch and dinner.

I have read many reviews on this forum from long-time St. Barth travelers and seasoned foodies which tout La Gaiac as the top table and overall best fine dining experience on the island.

take me to Select for a burger and a beer and than to Creperie for dessert and I will be a very happy camper...

but I suspect with my big 60th birthday bash taking place on the island next year I will have to agree on something a little more upscale...like maybe Andys...:)

A special DATE NIGHT at Jean Claude's L'esprit in saline would make for a memorable meal too.
