Birthday Dinner in St. Barths?

take me to Select for a burger and a beer and than to Creperie for dessert and I will be a very happy camper...

but I suspect with my big 60th birthday bash taking place on the island next year I will have to agree on something a little more upscale...like maybe Andys...:)

I'm not a fan of burgers, but I am a big fan of Creperie, at which we just had an excellent meal. The frites alone were worth the trip, and the caramel crepe was fantastic!

I will be there for that caramel crepe when visiting. So much to do with such little time. My next visit will definitely be longer.

Creperie rocks Tim.....been in our routine since day one year one

but for me its about the Marone Chantilly Crepe

Went to Jean Claude's L'Esprit for my birthday dinner in December and can honestly say it was the most disappointing meal of the trip and certainly not worthy of my birthday dollars. Sorry. Must have been an off night.

We weren't thrilled with L'Esprit last year either. We liked two of our dishes and did not think the other two were that good. I remember our server being a little miffed...and showing it...when I didn't want to order a bottle of wine. Jim was happy with a couple of glasses and I like martinis. I will say the chef, who did not know us, came out of his cooking nook to say Au Revoir to us.

Based on where you are staying, and assuming you are ready to spend, I'd do Eden Roc

Our visits to L'Esprit in November were great. So much so that when our plans for dinner blew up on one of our last nights, we slipped in a last-minute re-visit to L'Esprit instead.

With me you have to consider the source! I'm surprised I haven't been banned from the site for trashing the hamburgers at Select. The Carib's are fine but those burgers???

On the other hand, the other Jim's favorite lunch on the island is a can of the cassoulet they sell at Marche. Haute cuisine in a can!

We also just had a great meal at Esprit in late December... everything was delicious, especially the foie gras appetizer I had as a main course !

We ate there on three different nights last June and July and could not have been more pleased. Great service and of course the food was perfect.

You just talked me out of your reviews-

Add me to the list of people who don't get Select. It is OK, but I can name five bars in Chicago that I like more. If I'm going to drink with some grumpy locals who stand by the bar and sneer at non-regulars, the grumpy locals should be the people at Boss Bar (Clark and Hubbard) where I know them and I'm just as grumpy and sneering. Or D4 (Illinois between McClurg and Franklin) where I can get a perfectly poured Guinness and a shepherd's pie (comfort food at its best). The only really good thing about going to Select is that it means I'm on vacation.

If I'm going to have a burger and a beer on the island, I can do it at the villa and enjoy it more, particularly since the views are better and I can have as many beers as I want without worrying about getting behind the wheel.

A perfect on-island birthday cake for MikeR:

If you look them in the eye and say bonjour, they tend to be less grumpy. Buy a round of drinks and they might stop sneering :)

Also, meet Marius -- the twins will love him!

no offense intended but I would be more worried if you did get Select.....

I agree. Dive bars are great at home (or at least my own regular dive bar is great at home). When traveling, a dive bar needs some great food to make it worthwhile.

Plus, part of the great thing about dive bars is going to blow off steam from the office. You go there, see your friends, and enjoy the fact that the work day is over (admittedly, at times at 3:00). A great dive bar is a place where you wonder why you and your friends chose the place in the first place, but it is sort of an addiction.

None of those criteria work for Select. Don't know anybody, generally on vacation no reason to blow off steam or give anybody hell about anything, and it has not yet become an addiction.
