Followed a lead from Forum Member “etx“ (merci!) last night in visiting this restaurant for a cocktail before meeting a friend for dinner at Eddy’s. Somewhat to my surprise, it impressed me as a “winner!” Formerly known in so many iterations — from decades ago, known as L’Ananas, it also has been Le Strand, Ociela, Sky Bar, & Le Refuge. The current embodiment of the space — apparently associated with Bonito — was a pleasant surprise (&, not being a fan of Bonito, I wouldn’t have gone there without the etx recommendation!).
Arriving about 6:50 PM, I struggled a bit on a very steep hill (my taxi driver came around to make sure that I didn’t fall) to stairs from street level to the restaurant entrance . . . as I’ve recently become somewhat dependent on support of a walking stick. At the entrance, the manager (“Manolo,” perhaps an incorrect title for him) said, “I’m sorry, but we don’t open for 10 minutes.” The bar was clearly visible behind him, so I asked if I could wait at a seat at the bar. He graciously said, “of course” . . . which I did while Manolo finished his beginning-of-the-evening staff meeting.
At its conclusion, “Eddie,” a very professional & appropriately friendly bartender, fixed an excellent vodka gimlet for me. There was some light, superficial conversation (Eddie, quite young, has worked around the world!) I intermittently took some photos & engaged in light banter with him & Manolo. Two very pretty young women — “hostesses,” I suspect to be the correct term — also made light, helpful conversation about the extensive menu.
Photos . . . the bar & great views:
Ordering a ”small plate” dish, I had two pieces of sushi with foie gras. They were awesome . . . truly exquisitely flavored & presented.
For those who may be interested, here are some shots of the Barry’s menu.
(Please forgive the last, blurry image!)
Having enjoyed 30 minutes there, I nonetheless had to leave to navigate down the stairs & steep walk, passing alongside Black Ginger restaurant, to meet at Eddy’s for dinner. I’ll add that I’ll eagerly return to Barry’s another time for dinner.
