“Barry Rooftop”

Senior Insider
Followed a lead from Forum Member “etx“ (merci!) last night in visiting this restaurant for a cocktail before meeting a friend for dinner at Eddy’s. Somewhat to my surprise, it impressed me as a “winner!” Formerly known in so many iterations — from decades ago, known as L’Ananas, it also has been Le Strand, Ociela, Sky Bar, & Le Refuge. The current embodiment of the space — apparently associated with Bonito — was a pleasant surprise (&, not being a fan of Bonito, I wouldn’t have gone there without the etx recommendation!).

Arriving about 6:50 PM, I struggled a bit on a very steep hill (my taxi driver came around to make sure that I didn’t fall) to stairs from street level to the restaurant entrance . . . as I’ve recently become somewhat dependent on support of a walking stick. At the entrance, the manager (“Manolo,” perhaps an incorrect title for him) said, “I’m sorry, but we don’t open for 10 minutes.” The bar was clearly visible behind him, so I asked if I could wait at a seat at the bar. He graciously said, “of course” . . . which I did while Manolo finished his beginning-of-the-evening staff meeting.

At its conclusion, “Eddie,” a very professional & appropriately friendly bartender, fixed an excellent vodka gimlet for me. There was some light, superficial conversation (Eddie, quite young, has worked around the world!) I intermittently took some photos & engaged in light banter with him & Manolo. Two very pretty young women — “hostesses,” I suspect to be the correct term — also made light, helpful conversation about the extensive menu.

Photos . . . the bar & great views:

Ordering a ”small plate” dish, I had two pieces of sushi with foie gras. They were awesome . . . truly exquisitely flavored & presented.

Having enjoyed 30 minutes there, I nonetheless had to leave to navigate down the stairs & steep walk, passing alongside Black Ginger restaurant, to meet at Eddy’s for dinner. I’ll add that I’ll eagerly return to Barry’s another time for dinner.

It looks like it’s worth checking out, if only for a short visit such as yours.

The last time that I was there was when it still was L’Ananas. Unlike the restaurants between then and now, this one could ”stick”. The Bonito connection doesn’t hurt.

Hi Dennis,
I love the menu! I am assuming it opens at 7pm and I am tempted to try it. We always have to be careful to time dinners with our little dog’s seizure medicine thus we have become “early seating” people.
When it opened in the highest of the high season, I wasn’t too sure about trying it. Our kids said it was quite the party place when they were here. Do you know or did it appear as if it is indoors such that the smoke remains outdoors?

I was going to add Barry’s to my upcoming annual visit. The plan was to have cocktails prior to dinner at Bar de Pres; however, the website specifically says there is a 100 Euro minimum spend per person. That’s a lot of drinks if you are having dinner elsewhere.

Was the minimum spend not enforced? Perhaps, it’s enforced only if you reserve a table but not if you simply pull up a seat at the bar? Curious to find out because I would like to visit for pre-dinner drinks.

"Please note that we have a 10 minutes grace period, in case of delay the table will be released and your credit card will be charged. Please note that in case of no show or late cancellation less than 24 hours before the booking your credit card will be charged. The penalty charge is 100 euros per person. Reservations are not editable or postponable less than 24 hours before the booking. Please note that in case of short show the minimum spending applies for the table (100 euros X number of guests of the original reservation). Tables are reserved for a duration of 2 hours."

I think that's a "pass" for us.

It looks like this is only for no-shows or if a table was booked for 4 and only 2 or 3 show up ("short show" - I had to look that up). We didn't have a reservation, walked in and sat at bar, and certainly spent less than 200e total for the 2 of us. Never a mention about a minimum.

I was very impressed with the two small dishes we had and really liked the space. If it's still there next year we'll probably go for dinner.

You could have finished a drink by the time you read all the rules🙄. Menu sounds great, but I’m out.

I was at eden rock one day for lunch, I had called ahead for reservation for 2 persons at 12 in english of course. I showed up at noon and the receptionist said we have you down for 2 pm, but I have room for you now if you would like. I said no problem , there must have been some miscommunication. while seating us she said, you need to vacate this table by 2 pm please as we are sold out today for the later seating. I said , but don't I have a reservation at 2 pm? lol.

Rules and Regulations get crazier by the day. I stick to the tried-and-true establishments that know me and do not make me post a voucher when I make a reservation. Of course, I always keep my reservation. I doubt Mr. Dennis has to put down his credit card in advance around town 😜

Oui, Jamie! 7 PM opening . . . and not a “party” in sight! Of course, it was early . . . and Off Season. Maybe picks-up later in the evening.

Re: smoking, the rooms are very open to an “al fresco” world . . . especially if one has a table at a window opening. Generally speaking, I think that airflow would quickly dissipate any ambient smoke (&, BTW, it wasn’t clear that smoking in the area of restaurant tables would be permitted).

Perhaps but it says “in case of short show the minimum spending applies…” so that implies there is a minimum spending for a reserved table. It applies for those who show up and for those who don’t. In any event, we are going to give it a shot but that policy is ridiculous.

I suspect that the policy only applies for table or high top reservations and not for walk-in bar patrons.

probably the only place we go to where we don't spend at least 100€ per person is Le Piment.
the point is - their policies reflect an attitude regarding customers that doesn't align with our expectations.
a total turnoff.

. . . and prices were higher there last season (as with so many places).
