to tip or not to tip . . . that is the question

I doubt the issue is the same as it was in 2002 or 2003 (or 50k posts ago). Isn't another recurrent thread is how much the island has changed and that the poster is going to go to some unspoiled sparsely inhabited rock instead of this one to experience the essence of the ol' island experience?

I'm only interested in what should i do next month when I go out to dinner. Again, to tip or not to tip is the question. (My apologies to the Bard.)

Absolutely.....and understand that I am laughing as hard at myself as anyone else with all this .... so yes .....that too

and the answer is do whatever you want.......it's your money, your time, and your vacation

The other thing that bugs me about this is that I am guessing that visitors from mainland France are not solicited for tips, nor are locals. Why should it only be those of us from North America that have to pay the freight for this?

In our cafe we have a sign on the tip jar which says "keep the tips up"....it s a skiing pun..skiers will get it

on the Marina launch boat we have a sign which says. " we may tip over but you can't over tip"

There you go....a little anecdotal tipping humor

So what's next in the Groundhog Day rotation? ...longpants or shorts ???...ferry or plane?....Winaor or Commuter ?...villa or hotel ?.....to Rez or not to Rez ?

Mon ami, that's what we do on this site. You and Andy are undoubtedly aware of that as you've contributed more posts to these discussions than any of the rest of us. There will always be newer members who can benefit from your extensive knowledge of the island, but it's best served with a scoop of tolerance on top. We were all newbies once. :D

Echoing the sentiments of others, with above posts: What's so confusing here? Why does the subject of "tip or not tip" continue? What's the difficult part of this question?

Tip . . . or don't tip. Each person's choice. If you're indignant about a restaurant suggesting that you might want to tip . . . or even indignant about a waitperson proposing a tip . . . get over it. Do what you want. It appears clear that there are different "camps" with respect to the issue. I don't believe that there's a "right" or "wrong" answer.

I guess that I'm missing the merit found in a desire of some people to continue to express angst over a fairly simple matter.

Yeah I know.... just poking fun at us ....no harm no foul ...just fun

Amen....makes me think of what I seem to tell my daughter weekly these days .....

just do what's right in your heart, don't worry about what anyone thinks, and the rest will take care of itself just fine

I know. Amazing isn't it.

Pour citer un(e) ami(e) anonyme , " oui c'est chiant oui ils sont chiants mais ils ne vont pas arrêter d'être chiants."

It's not a simple or merit-less matter to those who's compensation is based upon the expectation of a tip and don't receive one. Are you the person who will stiff a waitperson in the US if they feel slighted for some subjective reason or if they believe that the waitperson has given poor service regardless of whether you know the reason for the issue with the service (assuming there is even one)? You are f'ing with someone's compensation. In my world, you never stiff a waitperson who is relying on tips for income--short of them (intentionally and without justifiable cause) sticking you in the neck with a fork. Maybe you leave a smaller one, but it's just a matter of degree. I agree it matters less for the pretty young things that work in resort hot spots for a few years like St Barth. For some, it results in their children not eating a meal or maybe a less nutritious one. It's a question of fairness. Although, that seems to not matter much to the "pull up the ladder" "I got mine" crowd.

How long does your villa concierge/housekeeper stick around if they knew you were telling your renters that a gratuity is not necessary or warranted?

On the other hand, I don't see any reason to throw money at people for no reason. I run my own business and have many mouths to feed. I also have my own preferred charitable entities i prefer to support.

You must be on the island often since you own a place. How much and with what regularity do you tip wait staff at restaurants on the island?

I think, mkunst, that you have misunderstood what I wrote. "Simple" is not "merit-less." You can find the meaning of the word in the dictionary as well as I can quote it to you.

As you have supposed, I am on the island frequently, and owners & waitstaff in restaurants I visit are long time friends . . . shared respect enjoyed amongst us. With due respect to your interest, moreover, I feel that the amount I tip (or don't tip) is none of your business. I'm confident, however, that I have no reason to be concerned about my reputation in restaurants . . . nor with housekeepers & others whose livelihoods are affected by whatever I may say and do. You're barking up the wrong tree.

Restricting posts to discussions of foals, or even fillies and colts, would dry this website's forums up pretty quickly, methinks....

As far as Groundhog Day goes, a question that I find interesting:

What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more' ... Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: 'You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine.' (Nietzsche, The Gay Science, 341).

Today, I would answer the latter. Hoping the same for all!
