Since writing earlier about “a private taxi,” I’ve learned that the Collectivité has a concept called “Transportation Company” which operates outside of the strictures of taxis. They operate under their own rules, subject to some Collectivité limitations — e.g., I understand that Transportation companies only can accept guests of more than a single person. They also are not limited by the Collectivité-approved/mandated fee schedule. What happens, I gather, is that if a hotel / restaurant cannot get a taxi for its clients within a discrete time frame (e.g., 15 minutes), it calls a Transportation Company. The client pays more than the scheduled taxi fare, but isn’t aware of it ‘til time to pay the bill . . . which can be a bit of a shock. (An unpleasant experience when it recently happen to me, & the driver (unknowing to me, from a Transportation Company), wouldn’t accept a credit card & demanded cash. It’s definitely in the vein of supplying transportation when a client wants it . . . the thinking being that SBH visitors will pay the price, whatever it is.
