Hello everyone! Just settling in on our first full day! Great lunch at the Sand Bar! They never miss!!!!

We requested a taxi and were quoted 160€. That seems insane to us!! Is that what the going rate is now?

If anyone has a contact, we would love to hear from you.

Thanks for the help.

cheaper than a complete pedicure

in all seriousness the taxis are the only game in town, so it is what it is. when I was walking with a friend, we decided we were too tired to walk farther. so we hitch hiked. about less than a minute, we got a ride. it was kind of fun.

Where was the taxi going to take you? How many people? That sounds like a crazy amount . . . and I take taxis everyday, so have a substantial frame of reference in assessing the quote that you got. Maybe it was a private taxi arranged by Eden Rock, which is a twist on so-called taxi service on the island — i.e., a taxi that operates outside Collectivité regulatory oversight.

We are traveling for dinner at Tamarin from Corossol. Our rental agency has arranged the ride. Definitely an eye opener for dinner planning.

Since writing earlier about “a private taxi,” I’ve learned that the Collectivité has a concept called “Transportation Company” which operates outside of the strictures of taxis. They operate under their own rules, subject to some Collectivité limitations — e.g., I understand that Transportation companies only can accept guests of more than a single person. They also are not limited by the Collectivité-approved/mandated fee schedule. What happens, I gather, is that if a hotel / restaurant cannot get a taxi for its clients within a discrete time frame (e.g., 15 minutes), it calls a Transportation Company. The client pays more than the scheduled taxi fare, but isn’t aware of it ‘til time to pay the bill . . . which can be a bit of a shock. (An unpleasant experience when it recently happen to me, & the driver (unknowing to me, from a Transportation Company), wouldn’t accept a credit card & demanded cash. It’s definitely in the vein of supplying transportation when a client wants it . . . the thinking being that SBH visitors will pay the price, whatever it is.

I’d recommend that you inquire of the concierge whether the fare is a taxi or a Transportation Company.

I would call the taxi myself. get the number from the concierge, most drivers here speak some english. I remember when I had the front desk of a hotel in puerto rico call me a cab, the driver came inside and handed the girl at the desk a few dollars for calling him. I don't know if it happens here. If you get a taxi driver that you like, then always call him. the best bet on this island is to rent a car, its much cheaper and more fun to drive yourself.

Good morning. Dennis thank you for your research. The rental company did make the reservation with a travel company. What a rip off!!

I agree with Diana, get our own taxi. Hopefully the rental team will give me list. If there is someone one the forum who have recently used a person that is reliable, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I’m told that “it sounds like a communication problem . . . the rate for a 1 hr island tour is 160E.”
