Dumb question but need to know

We will have WiFi where we're staying on St. Barth. So we are taking the laptop (as much as I don't want to), mostly for business. Is there anything different about receiving a wireless signal on the island than here at home? The reason I'm asking is we had WiFi at our resort when we were in Cancun in January. It was spotty at best. When we returned home we couldn't even pick up our own wireless signal and it took a while to re-configure everything. What have your experiences been? Thanks.

Carolyn

Re: Dumb question but need to know

WiFi is WiFi -- and international standard. It should work fine, on a Mac :)

Re: Dumb question but need to know

No problem. You will get a code to go with the villa Wifi that you will use when your laptop picks up the new signal and prompts you to enter the code. I assume the villa WiFi is encrypted.

It is also open (no PW) at many placed around the island.

As a matter of curiousity, is there the equivalent of a "Geek Squad" on the island? gotta believe many of us face issues with our toys while there...

Only during Carnaval week. He's back in No. Va. now....

There are several local companies who work with computers that could help in such situations. I looked in my Collins Robert and couldn't find an equivalent French word for "geek." French scholars....?

When we had trouble with the wi-fi at the villa, SBP had a guy come over who was the French equivalent of "geeky".

That is true- the renamed Entracte has Free Wifi but if the villa has it why bother any other place? Also, Valerie at Sibarth set up my laptop for dial-up with a short cut in 5 minutes.

For your WiFi enabled handheld (iPhone, BlackBerry and others) when you are out and about. Dial-up is so 1988.

Re: Dumb question but need to know

There is wifi at Bar Oubli that actually reaches across the street and allows you to sit at "the office" and log on (not where I am now,but it is possible)
