Volcanic Ash Affects SJU Flights

This has also been a problem in SXM recently.

(CNN) -- Volcanic ash led officials Tuesday to cancel dozens of commercial flights into and out of Puerto Rico.

Ports Authority Director of Aviation Arnaldo Deleo cited ash from the Soufriere volcano hovering some 10,000 feet over the Island of Montserrat as the reason for the cancellation of more than 60 flights.

Jet Blue, Delta, AirTran, Continental, US Airways, United, Spirit, American Eagle and Copa were among the airlines operating out of Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in Isla Verde and airports in Aguadilla and Ponce that were affected.

Ash emissions from the volcano have been ongoing for several weeks, according to weather and volcano monitors.

In a statement, Deleo said he hoped the air would clear sufficiently to resume operations Wednesday morning, but recommended that passengers check with their airlines.

Montserrat is always spewing and steaming and spitting....pretty normal..we went right by it on one of my Mom birthday cruises when it was going off pretty good...pretty spectacular stuff to see up close, but the sulphuric rotten egg smell in the air I could have done without

Yeah, we went past Aetna? On Sicily? one night. Captain stopped the ship to watch a minor eruption...pretty cool...

its Etna and I climbed it ( it actually has a ski lift for skiing ) and I took out the most incredible piece of lava, all kinds of crystal flecks in it, which I took home and sits on my mantle

I too like to pick up a rock/shell/small jar of sand and bring it home as a souvenir. After a hike in Nevada's Red Rock Canyon, I found and pocketed a beauty of a small red rock. Upon leaving the parkground, there was a sign that stopped me dead in my tracks-IF EVERYONE LEFT WITH A RED ROCK, SOME DAY THERE COULD BE NO RED ROCK CANYON. Something to think about. Oh, by the way, I still have the rock.

I collect rocks from everywhere and display my better ones...,I ve got some amazing pieces of amethyst..and I've got a stunning turquoise amethyst form a Colorado mine..got some awesome red rocks form Moab too

It's been blowing off and on for the last 10-15 years..usually the winds take the ash off to the SW over open wather but now and then as yesterday it blows the ash to the NW and can cause a lot of problems for flights into SXM,STT,STX and SJU..we didnt cancel any of our AA flights in or out of SJU yesterday as there was actually never any ash that fell at the airport nor was there any to the North,West Northwest or Northeast of Puerto Rico that our flights would have had to descend through.

We have a sand collection from beaches around the world. Rule: gotta be a family member, feet gotta hit the beach. Daughter's recent 2 month sojourn in SE Asia added 6-7 beaches to the collection...Bali, etc.

Thanks Tim..Same to you and DIDI...Been busy working and flying back and forth home to STL..Was able to get there for Christmas evening but will be here in Dallas working tomorrow night..I've been lurking on here and keeping up with everyone...

Happy New Year, Debo. Thanks for keeping those AA (always our chosen carrier) flights on time. Don't know how the airlines manage to cope with all the issues of weather, terrorism threats and the like but you keep us moving through the skies. Most appreciated.

debo,
Thanks for all those cockpit messages to us from Big Brother on the ground to Big Bird in the sky! Always fun to receive!

Happy New Year! Heading back down IAD-SJU on 2/8!
