Villa Pool question

The last villa we stayed at had an infinity edge pool. Extra water was stored under the deck in a large tank away from the sun. To heat that tank would have taken quite a bit of energy. Not sure if the style of pool adds to the coldness (infinity edge pool with large water reserve hidden somewhere out of the view of prying eyes vs a regular pool with little to no water reserve).

That seems strange to me. Why would they store a large quantity of extra water. The water that goes over the edge usually just goes back through the filter and back into the pool. Wonder if the large tank was actually the cistern?

And I think the real killer in keeping the pools warm is the wind. Whatever heat that is gained during the day is lost at night, and then some. A simple floating bubble cover over the pool at night would probably do wonders in retaining the heat. Of course it doesn't look as good as an uncovered pool but it sure holds the heat in!

You may be right, it could have been the cistern, but I don't think it was. Our daugther was running around jumping into the pool causing it to overflow the infinity edge quite a bit..... to the point that it would take 5-10 minutes for the water to flow back over the infinity edge again.... heck, anytime someone gets into the pool they displace a good amount of water. The water was going into the trough and being whisked away by pipes and I assume into the tank. I was curious so I went to have a look where the water went. At the time I assumed extra water was needed to be kept in a tank to keep the system running.... that is, if you end up with water loss (due to evaporation, a large number of people in the pool.... or an over zealous 9yo) then the system wouldn't filter properly.

But again, it is possible that I am wrong and it was the cistern for the villa. Unfortunately I did not take a photo as it was a pretty uninspiring area.

I was able to locate information on this website:

The tank I referenced is actually called a balancing tank.
