Supermarkets?

Thanks. While that list is great it’s not very descriptive as far as the size and offerings are concerned.

Is the super U by the airport the largest, go-to super market on the island?

There are only 2 butchers on the list and both are crossed out.

Any weekly open air farmers markets?

Marche U by the airport is the largest. Crazy busy on a Friday afternoon. There is a large butcher counter there. We often go there after arrival to grab a few things to stock up and then go to the market that's closest to where we usually stay towards the eastern half of the island. So the U Express in Lorient and the new Monoprix.

I take it that you have not been before. There are no open air farmer's markets as there are very few farms. There's essentially no arable land.

I suggest going to the fish market for fresh local fish though you will need to be there early. 7am is usually good. Some French will also be helpful as the fishermen don't have much English.

First time not staying in a hotel which is why I ask…is the “new” monoprix a different one than whats listed on the sheet? Lorient or st Jean?

Both are new, taking over some of the AMC space (St Jean), and a home goods space in Lorient, formerly the Mini Mart. They built a new store behind Jojo Supermarket in Lorient. The Monoprix in Lorient is the larger of the two.

You should also have a peek into Foodland’s storefront in Gustavia. Foodland and Chef’s Market are the two largest food purveyors to restaurants. Foodland has a storefront along the harbor in Gustavia. Chef’s Market is harder to find.

Agree. Earlier than 7:00 good idea. Main one in Gustavia, smaller one in Lorient.

I like Monoprix. When we are in Paris, the flat we rent has a Monoprix close by so that when they opened on SBH I was already positivity predisposed to checking it out when it opened in Lorient. Very nice store but I do miss the jumble of JoJos. The island is going much more upscale in general. Similar to what is happening with the area that we have our beach house in New England. The old local market was this ramshackle place. Got torn down years ago and turned into a fancy pants market and catering place. Nice but I miss the old place. Probably because I am also getting older. 🧐
