Shellona Replacement - Loulou

I’ve heard that the replacement for Shellona is going to be Loulou, and it now appears on the Hotel Barrère Le Carl Gustaf‘s (or is it being rebranded to Fouquet’s?) website. Loulou is a group of restaurants in France, with locations in Paris, Courcheval, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (near Monaco, and Ramatuelle (near St Tropez). Loulou Group is now owned by Lucien Barrière Group, so the change from Shellona may represent a further integration of the location into the Group. Opening is scheduled for November.

I’ve heard nothing yet about the menu. Given the location, and the location of the other Loulou Group restaurants, I’m pretty sure that it won’t be Cheeseburger Pommes Frites. The Goose (it will always be The Goose to me) still has a relationship with La Guérite, and is using La Guérite Beach as their beach restaurant for the Summer. Whether or not Chef Yannis Kioroglou is still involved is not known to me.

Thank you, Kevin, for this update . . . very interesting.

In the original deal in which Carl Gustaf was purchased by Groupe Barrière, ancillary acquisitions included “Route des Boucaniers“ (now Petit Plage) & “Do Brasil” (thereafter, Shellona . . . and now, apparently becoming Loulou’s). The former was deemed to be the Hotel’s “City Club,” with the latter being its “Beach Club. Brilliant marketing, I would say.

I look forward to Loulou’s. Shellona developed an unfortunate reputation as a rip-off scene among Americans. I hope that Loulou will build a positive vibe & high quality of food & service. (In this regard, meanwhile, my experience at La Guérite — an exceptionally lovely summer beach bar / luncheon venue — has been very positive. Apart from exceptionally high prices (IMO), the food quality & service have been excellent, in a beautiful setting.)

It was rebranded as Fouquet's at the beginning of last season - I remember seeing some sort of social media release about it.

I loved the casual but upscale vibe of Do Brazil. It had charm and a touch of being offbeat and unexpected. Even though the food was outstanding, it didn't feel slick or formulaic. I'm saddened that this will become the kind of place that is part of a corporate chain. I hope it retains a connection to the island.

Do Brazil had a dish on the menu that remains one of my favorites. I know I have photos of it somewhere, but it was a waffle, with cured mahi mahi (or something like that), and a coconut vanilla creme. It was such a good combination of flavors and beautiful presentation that was so unique to St Barth (come to think of it, the mahi mahi with vanilla sauce at Sante Fe was the same combo of flavors, but two very very different dishes.) I so hope the menu is not just a cookie cutter repeat of others.

Do Brazil was always a go-to for us for many years, starting with our honeymoon at Carl Gustaf in 2004 - it really did have a unique vibe and great food. I miss it.

. . . and I miss David MOUTON (manager at Do Brazil before moving to Santa Fe Restaurant for seven years, when Do Brazil was acquired by Groupe Barrière at the time it bought a lease on Carl Gustaf Hotel)!
