Shell Beach? Do Brazil??

It isn't the first time and won't be the last time Shell Beach gets washed away. That's what keep the dredging companies in business. At least there will be all new shells.

Marius said just before the storm alert they were out there laying the big pipe. Probably be back right after Fiona sashays by.

Not far from the original name you will find.

If you check the old maps it is known as "Anse De Grands Galets"

Big Pebble Beach.

Right, not a natural sandy beach at all, our embedded native said there was no sand there until the 1970s when they dredged the harbor and brought all the sand and shells there...
thus the name "Grands Galets" - the tourists started to call it Shell Beach after since there were so many shells found there...

Hasn't there been a sign in town within the last few years that pointed to "Grand Galets" or something similar? I seem to recall . . .

i just saw the photo....how utterly heartbreaking. i am so sad! my beautiful shell beach is no more.....! how long do you think it will take for it to come back?

It was once a trash dump.

95 days and counting!! :) Wheels up 6am RDU wheels down 1530 SBH

Glad to see most of the island is trees and branches down, and all members of the forum are safe and sound. Hopefully, Fiona will not follow Earl's path.

You aren't thinking of the abattoir are you? Just around the point the remains of slaughtered animals used to be thrown into the sea.

Shark fun all round.

I thought that trash was dumped into the sea from up near the hospital, not from down on Shell Beach. I remember sitting in what is now HCH in '89 and watching a refrigerator float by. But those were the bad old days.

The good news is that the island, like the rest of us, has become much more enlightened on environmental issues and trash disposal. SBH now seems to do at least as good a job of waste recycling and disposal as any island in the Caribbean, and quite possibly better.

Remy enjoyed traipsing around there in June. I for one hope it is regenerated
