Semi Live TR: Phase One - Arrival

A Day Late and (several hundred) Dollars Short

So for the first time in like, forever, (2006- return from the Orange Bowl) we missed our flight. It was a shared responsibility of us (90%) and our very late cab (10%). We simply did not allow enough time to flight internationally during the holidays in the Plague Times. Live and Learn.

Gratefully, AA rebooked us on the same itinerary for the next day. However, Winair did not have anything available. Good thing we had plenty of time on our “free” day, because we also needed new COVID tests and to resubmit the EHAS with new dates. Oh, and get ferry tix.

Arrival attempt 2 was much improved. We drove ourselves and got an amazing parking space. Flights left on time and we were able to move seats so we could sit together from CLT to SXM. Then right at boarding I thought to check the Winair site. Sure enough, there were seats on the 3:50 flight. Quickly emailed them and were booked! Woo hoo!

Not for nothing, but SXM is still a circus. We were already cutting it close with a 2:37 arrival and no boarding passes (on your phone does NOT count). I think we had 6 or 7 different stops or checkpoints. So it was off to the races and with a combination of my bossiness and the boldness of another group even more anxious than us to get there (or more willing to cut lines), we made it to the gate at the moment of boarding. Apologies to any readers who were standing in the lines at SXM.

So we’re here. And enjoying this view:

It feels like home.

More later. This feels like doing something and I need to do nothing….

"This feels like doing something and I need to do nothing…."

That's an awesome line!!!

Better late than never. Have a great time!!!

Marybeth, I will be happy to sign a gift book from me to you..I have titled my story MASTERING THE ART OF DOING NOTHING

Nice recovery and extra points for self-assigning 90% of the blame! Now enjoy the PRESENT!

MB, just went back to your 11/14 Ducks in a Row, didn't see listed...go early early & earlier ! Glad you made it tho to paradise, great view, trying to figure out what area you are in ? I think D & I would not have made it through the hoops you had to jump ! We for years flew from PHL, then eventually from SAV, to SXM or SJU on the Monday of Thanksgiving week & never encountered the mobs of today at any airport. Glad we switched to spring. Enjoy your time on SBH !

I was mostly proud that I didn't lose my $&!* and was basically resigned to the sitch. We did try some alternative routes like via SJU but nothing was going to get us there before Sunday so we stayed with the AA plan. The tests were no biggie because we are lucky to have many options in Pittsburgh (all free). Our EHAS forms came back quickly too.

I promised Randy that I am now a completely reformed "Get to the Airport as Late as Possible" person and will henceforth not complain when he is rushing me out the door.

Today's big news is that the planes are landing backwards. Live from our balcony overlooking St. Jean:

With that view, we sometimes make a bet on the number of landings. At 5:00 we set an Over/Under number on how many flights will land between then and when the airport closes. One person picks the number, and the other person gets first choice of Over or Under.

In case your forget, here's one I took from my villa a few years ago landing the right way!

That sounds like fun…..and it’s barely nothing, too!
