Sand Bar another miss

SBH Insider
We decided after a morning and early afternoon of hanging by the pool at the villa that we would drop down to SB for a late lunch. We really aren't "lunchers" but on St Barths we make exceptions from time to time. Seated at a great corner table looking down the main restaurant with a great breeze. We decided to order a couple of glasses of white wine and take it from there. Service seemed okay at first. We shared the tuna tartare and despite my wife's distaste for ginger, it was a nice appetizer.

I ordered the lobster salad, my first time this trip, and Kimberly ordered the mahi mahi burger. Unfortunately, that's where things started to go downhill.

My salad came drenched in a champagne butter dressing, with four small lobster medallions and zero tomatoes. I had a bite and, thanks to my wife, sent it back. I hate being that guy. I've learned my lesson at this place over the years. Keep my mouth shut and let the boss handle any discrepancies. It came back with the dressing on the side, still no tomatoes (ugh) and less lobster, but I made it work.

Kimberly's mahi mahi burger had a fishy taste, and there's no way I would've put that on a plate if I owned a restaurant. But I don't. 😊 It was mediocre at best and, compared to the mahi mahi burgers at Pearl, there's no comparison. Don't waste your time ordering either of what we had.

What continues to frustrate us about SB is that this feels like a pattern. After the food issues, the service turned noticeably dismissive. I'll leave her name out of it, but there was no eye contact and very little attention from any of the staff. Which was odd because we were obviously enjoying ourselves and making the best of it.

Our glasses sat empty on the table for about 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. So we ordered a bottle to take that element of service out of the equation.

This was our fourth visit in the last two years. I think lunch around this same time last year was perfectly fine, but this visit, and honestly our last two dinners there as well, have been big swings and misses.

They can do better. At this point, though, they have the crowd and the reputation, and I'm still trying to figure out why. Other than the location, of course. 😉

Lunch tomorrow at SB for fete des meres. Fingers crossed!
I forgot to add our tuna tartare was really good. I think the overall theme is just the service in comparison to every other place we have been on this trip. Some of the other plates looked very good. We just swung and missed with our selections.

So incredibly sorry you had a bad experience. I think I had the lobster roll and it was great. Wishing you a better experience.

What a shame - we have loved going to Sand Bar for our first day lunch on the island and it has not disappointed. We’ve found it a great “we’re here!” lunch. That said, it’s so frustrating when these places don’t make the effort. And you’d think that with so many options on the island that each of the “big places” would try to put their best foot forward, but, I doubt they’re hurting. And that said (sorry to repeat), “so many restaurants, so little time” works in the favor of the visitors.

Ya hit the nail on the head!

Hi!
I totally agree about the experience at Sand Bar. For us it has been 50-50. They’re either on their game or they are off their game for lunch or dinner. My husband and I will literally toss a coin before we go and see who wins. Usually, we would not go except if we have visitors and they want to try it once in their lifetime… but we always have a running joke about between the service and the food. Even my husband had to send food back and he’s usually not that guy either! Sometimes it is also just a nice option if you get a great table, and good breeze but if we go, we have to order a bottle of wine and we usually have to serve it ourselves, and sort of stick with something to eat that we hope they do not mess up. I do like to look out at the water from that spot because it brings back a lot of memories, especially when our kids were young.

on the other hand, the Rémy Bar is a nice chic stop-off for a pre-cocktail cocktail if dining elsewhere in Saint-Jean 🤓

Oy. only going for 10 days so I was wondering how we could fit SB into our rotation either for dinner or lunch, however, the more news I hear about it the less inclined I am to make the commitment. Enjoy everything else in paradise my friend.

Why patronize an expensive restaurant that is 50/50 hit or miss? It is off my rotation for those reasons two year ago, and I see no improvement basing upon the most recent comments to add back on to the rotation. There are so many other places that are 100% assured of a pleasant experience.

Caribbean Soul you inspired our dinner last nite...previously made Vidalia onion soup a la Julia, Vidalia onions are only from specific places in GA released in late spring to stores. I had 1 Bahamian lobster tail in freezer...steamed it, then cut into medallions, 6 each sauteed lightly, served in seafood-y dishes with mixed greens & baby rainbow tomatoes...just a simple light oil & vinegar dressing. Followed by dessert of SC peaches & blueberries.

Sorry about your disappointments at the SB...have been enjoying your posts & going along the way with you two...happy anniversary!

I too had a bad lunch recently when ordered a fried green tomato salad, was an appetizer but was my main...1 slice of the tomato so questioned the server who said, yep that's right just then bringing me a small plate with 2 more slices saying don't tell anyone. Off my list !

Had wonderful lunch today. Relaxing vibe, attentive service. Tartare was excellent as always. Wife's watermelon gazpacho was refreshing. We split a lobster roll, which actually had lobster in it, unlike ti corail. Have had a miss or two in the past, but fortunately not to the levels some of you.
