Road Rue Du Barrage

I have a friend renting a villa in St Jean called Villa Vouge next month. They have just been informed by a driver they have hired that the road leading up to it is so bad he won’t drive up there. “Rue du Barrage” Is it that bad? Any info I can pass on would be great.

I don't know the villa, but those roads up on the St. Jean hill are primative.

Cheers. Thanks. I have passed it on. I will be on the island a couple of weeks before them so I can get photos but it will be too late for them to change villas.

We are here now staying above St. Jean. Our road is fine but it looks like their villa is higher up. Will find that road and villa and let you know what it looks like.

Thank you so much. We stay in Gustavia so don’t travel that road too much so never really noticed

I am not familiar with Rue du Barrage but have rented a villa several times on the other side of the main road Route de St Jean. The road to the villa doesn’t seem to even have a name. It’s right before the road you mentioned. It’s steep, narrow and rutted. But I’ve not had issues getting up and down it. The biggest problem is when there is the occasional car going the other way and someone has to back up as there isn’t enough room to pass. The views from up on the hill are magnificent though.

Quick question. Would you say it’s walkable up and down to St Jean for fit 40yr olds

Hello Belinda,
I have rented a Villa very close by from Corcoran recently. Yes, the road is rutted, and you bounce up and down but very drivable even in a car. I always rent a Jimny from Gumbs and it is very easy to maneuver, just go slowly after you make the turn to the right and go up the hill. The views are very nice. It is a strain to walk up from St. Jean beach to the Villa but as shihadehs stated can be done. I am 70 and I can do it but get a little winded and my calves know it :)

Thank you so much. I will pass the info on. So looking forward to our two weeks in May. Any locals want to get together for drinks and nibbles it would be nice to meet up as we are still looking for our property on this beautiful island.

I didn't notice anyone mentioning 4WD. I don't know that particular road but 4WD is likely a good idea!

The WIMCO listing says “* Note - A four-wheel drive is highly recommended. ”

I saw one photo (not on the WIMCO site) which shows two Jeeps in the parking area.

We have friends who are in Villa Vogue this week. They haven't mentioned a problem with access, but I'll check with them.
