Review of our Trip April 22- May 1

Hi all,
We’re newbies to St Barts. This was our 4th consecutive trip.
Connected via WinAir to SBH.
Booked Premium IV to help with transfer. Everything went smoothly. Would always use them as our flights from Toronto are often delayed and I like knowing they will handle the luggage etc if there’s any issues.

9 nights, of which we spent 3 at Carl Gustav and then moved to a villa for the last 6 nights.
This was our first time in a villa and I was very apprehensive about security.

Carl Gustav: we chose to stay in Gustavia this time to get a feel of the town and decide if it would be an option for our entire trip moving forward.
The hotel is amazing, service , rooms , iconic view,
transfers from the airport, plentiful water everyday, and access to Shell Beach was great.
Our suite had a plunge pool and although not heated it was perfect after a hot sticky day at the beach.

We loved being able to walk everywhere. Got our steps in everyday lol. We enjoyed ambling town and not worrying about parking.

BeefBar ,great. Good food , wonderful service. Lovely ambiance. The DJ played a good selection of music of different genres which was really nice.

My only complaint is that the food was served at room temperature. I found this an issue at most restaurants. I get waiting for the Steak to rest, but didn’t enjoy cold Beef Bolognese.
Souffle for dessert was sublime.

We had lunch at Shellona. Lovely as always. Food and service has been consistently good for us every time. Feta in Phyllo with Honey, my favourite dish at Shellona.
Our only little issue was when we had lunch at our loungers on Day 3.
We also ate at L’Isola- service and food on point. Warm delicious bread, amazing delicate fresh scampi, and a lovely Saffron Risotto.
Walked back to the hotel afterwards, enjoying the lights in the town and the beautiful island breeze we are always thankful we are able to return.

On our last night in town we tried Le Cafe, pretty decor, friendly staff. Well heeled more mature clientele.
Food was really good,
Amazing bread and one of the few places that served it warm, but the chicken served in a skillet was cold.
Divine flavour, delicious sauce but cold. Bit disappointing.
The musicians and chanteuse were soo talented.
I would return.
We used a taxi to go down to Le Cafe from the hotel €25 lol for like a 3 min drive, but I wasn’t going to attempt walking in my heels and risking an ankle injury.
The hotel kindly offered to send their car down at the end of the evening to pick us up so that worked out well.

I picked up some cute dresses at Poupette and Zimmerman. Their selection is far greater than what we get in Toronto.

The Junior store had lovely kids stuff and someone here suggested asking what would be on sale, come May 3, so I did and the assistant very kindly showed me what she had already marked down in preparation so I bought some gorgeous stuff for the grandkids at the sale price.

Will continue Villa stay in next post.

No plans yet for 2026.
Have a family destination wedding either in Dubai or South Africa in April so waiting on those dates and already booked a cruise in Jan. So 2026 a bit up in the air for now re :St Barts but I’m hopeful to squeeze in a trip at some point.

Will post 2nd part of trip after work today.

Finally have some down time.

We hooked a 1 BR Villa in St.Jean. It is our favourite area. We like the close proximity to Gustavia, if dining out at night. I don’t like the windy, dark roads to the other areas so this works for us.

Booked through Eden Rock Villa Rental.
Pick Up from Carl Gustav and transfer to the Villa was efficient.
Our rental was dropped off at the villa soon after arrival.
We rented Villa Case Thalie. Gorgeous villa, heated pool which we used every day. Well appointed and meticulously maintained. The fridge was full with water, and a cheese plate.
Amazing, amazing, view. I could’ve sat for hours watching the planes land and take off.

Our concierge was wonderful and it was great to have reservations done for us. Previously I’ve done it myself, and I did book Nikki Beach Sunday 330pm months prior to arrival.
Breakfast delivery was prompt every morning. Delicious croissants , juices and a baguette.

We did a Super U run on our second day in the villa for pop, yoghurt and some fruit.

We gad access to ER beach and loungers which our concierge booked for us. We did this 2 times and one day had lunch at Sandbar. It was a really good lunch. Good food , great service, wonderful ambiance. Accras were scrumptious and piping hot.
Delicious lobster rolls.
Amazing Truffle pizza.

Interestingly though our light, early dinner one night after a long day beach hopping was really mediocre.
Service was amazing, bread was phenomenal but the food was just meh! Beetroot salad minute and underseasoned. Lobster ravioli - cold and the bisque to pour over again cold.
Souffle was divine.

I think for us Sandbar will be just for lunch moving forward.

On one of our ER beach days we walked over to Pearl Beach for lunch.
It gets such great reviews on the board so we thought we had to try it.
It’s a lovely spot, great views, friendly staff, but the grilled lobster was a bit of a disappointment. Over grilled and just ok. The creole rice was rather unimpressive as well. They really need a good lemon butter or garlic butter or Piri Piri sauce to go with the lobster.
The grilled lobster we had at Sante Fe on our first trip was soo good.
For us , Pearl Beach is a one and done.

We also did a beach day at GypSea.
We booked loungers and lunch.
I didn’t think to check prices of loungers as assumed they may be a bit more than last year. €50 pp in 2024.
This year €80pp🙈, so a tad bit more.
I should’ve stayed at ER and walked over for lunch lol. Lesson learned!
Lunch was really good and just fyi the lobster per 100g is cheaper at GypSea than Pearl.
Ok just by €1 per 100, but it’s cheaper lol.

We did not cook in the villa, even though I did take some spices along.
I just felt too tired after a day at the beach.

We also tried Tamarin for the first time.
Setting is gorgeous, no mosquitos bothered me, even with no bug spray.
Service was great, food good. Banoffee for dessert, delicious.
We went early and had pre dinner drinks in the garden and then sat in the main pavilion for dinner.
I’m glad we did as it poured during dinner, with people being relocated to the pavilion.

On our last night we ate at La Casina. The food is really really good. Service friendly and on point. Bread from the pizza oven toasty and warm with a smoky taste, just divine.
The Branzino was cooked perfectly, crispy skin, light and flaky.
If we had eaten there earlier in the trip we would have gone back a second time to try the pizzas.
They looked amazing. Well priced and good for a simple italian meal.

Once again we had a great trip.
Next time we’re thinking splitting our time between Cheval Blanc and a Villa .

Best Dinner: L’Isola
Best Lunch : Sunday at Nikki. The food at Nikki has been consistently good, tasty , well presented and well priced. We may be aging out of late lunch at Nikki but for now, we still enjoy the silliness.
I’m happy to watch others overindulge lol.
Service here has always been polite and personable. Next time I’ll also book a regular lunch mid week at Nikki, just to enjoy the food. It was that good. The Shrimp Pil Pil, reminded me of the Mozambique style prawns that we get in South Africa.

We did prefer long, later lunches and lighter dinners.
Our time in St Barts is really to decompress.
We get up, coffee, brekkie , dip in the pool and then head out to a beach or two or some shopping, or take a drive , lunch , back to the villa, pool time again and then head out for dinner. It’s just perfect for us.

Places we didn’t get to, but on my list for next time:
Nyama- closed when we wanted to go.
L’Esprit

We had a fabulous time.
We were not asked for tips anywhere except Shellona at the Beach, but there’s always that bit of apprehension when the bill comes as to how it’s going to go and I don’t like that feeling.

Thank you to all on this forum who take the time to post. We’ve learnt alot from you all.
I’m not sure why some pics are not posting.
Am I doing something wrong?
