Restaurant Reservations

KevinS

Senior Insider
Every once in a while the question of dinner reservations comes up. Do I need them? Should I make them before I leave home? My usual answer is a solid maybe.

Many regular visitors to SBH make it through an entire trip without knowing more than a few hours or minutes in advance where they'll be going to lunch or dinner on any given day. Others have at least a loose idea of which restaurants they want to visit. A few even have a plan for the week. I'm somewhere between the last two groups I have an idea where I want to visit, and I have a plan, but the plan rarely lasts beyond the first night.

During normal times (other than holidays Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, perhaps Valentine's Day) it usually isn't necessary to make reservations for lunch or dinner at most restaurants. But it never hurts. At worst, in the slow times, it cheers the staff by letting them know that at least someone is coming to dinner that night. Often it will get you a better table. Perhaps you'll be able to get into a restaurant that might not be able to accommodate you as a walk-in later on that night.

There are certain hot tables where it always helps to have a reservation. Maya's is one that comes to mind. Andy's Hideaway on Sunday night is another. Reservations are helpful at some of the hotel restaurants at their prime dining hours - Sand Bar at Eden Rock, La Case de le Ile at Hotel St Barth Ile de France, and Le Gaac at Le Toiny are three that come to mind.

Another time when it helps to make a reservation is when you have a special night to celebrate - a birthday, anniversary, or other significant event - and you have your heart set on celebrating it at one particular restaurant. Making a reservation in advance will help to assure you that you will have a table, and will let you know if the restaurant is already booked for a special event on that night (I've had this happen), or if you've picked a night when the restaurant is normally closed (I've done this too).

What I generally do is to make reservations for special events in advance, but make previous day or same day reservations for the rest. Almost without exception (Eddy's, which doesn't accept reservations, comes to mind) I make reservations for dinner. About 30% of the time I make reservations for lunch.

So how do you make those reservations? I long ago discovered that nobody was keeping an up-to-date list of which restaurants are closed on which nights, or a complete list of restaurant phone numbers. I've made my own list, which gets updated about twice each year, either from my island visits or with info from other participants here. Others have found it useful, and JEK has been kind enough to post a copy of it on his web page. Another collaborative effort between JEK, Tim, and others has led to the creation of a pictorial restaurant guide, as well as island and Gustavia maps showing approximate restaurant locations.

Some restaurants, Au Port and Le Sapotillier are two, have practices that date back to the "Sorry, No Telephone Days", when not every villa had a phone. You'll find their menu and a pad of paper and pen on their front door. If the menu appeals to you and you would like to have dinner there that night then just write down your name and the time of your desired reservation. They'll still take a reservation by telephone, but sometimes it's just as easy to write down your name as you're passing by.

So, you've spent the day at the beach, you haven't even thought about dinner, and "horrors" you haven't made a reservation. No worries. While a reservation is helpful, you'll always be able to find someplace to eat without one. There's even a very good chance that you'll be able to get into your first choice of restaurants, assuming that it's not Wall House or Maya's on Thanksgiving, or Andy's on Sunday night. Every restaurant will do their best to seat you. You may have to wait a bit, or you may have to try another restaurant.

Either way, you'll likely end up with a great meal.

Thanks Kevin, you are off to a great start as our guest lecturer :)

Re: Newbie Info du Jour

Good start Kev- you set the bar. Don't take any of my material tho. :)
I would add that Wall House is always a hot ticket and I have seen many turned away without reservations.

Re: Newbie Info du Jour

great post, kevinS. full of information i had never heard before. we're off to an excellent start with the guest newbie info posters!!!

Well said. You could have even been a little more forceful-even if it is only an hour or so in advance, it is considered polite to reserve, and rude not to.In a North American context, this is not the case-you generally reserve to be assured of a table. In a European context, even if a resto is empty,it is always seen as a matter of good manners to call in advance.(Not to say Andy won't always squeeze you in (!), but it is always better to reserve anywhere,if at all possible)
Thanks for the post, and all your work on the list

Re: Newbie Info du Jour

lloyd, you've got a point. my grandmother had a list of 'social graces' and i believe it was #7 that stated you never show up for a meal unwelcomed (w/o reservation) or unannounced. that included a person's home or a restaurant.

Re: Newbie Info du Jour

I agree that reservations are a sign of good breeding ..... and disagree that Andy will always "fit you in". That may be true for those folks he knows, but we have seen him turn many people away many times - not just on Sunday. I would add Andy's to the short list of "must make a reservation" - and the earlier, the better.

Re: Newbie Info du Jour

well golly gee.,...I should call my mother up right now and let her know I am a victm of "bad breeding".....good God I've heard it all now.....LOL.

in my real life way too much of my time is orchestrated and planned to the tiniest microsecond.....like all of you I'm sure....so when we are on vacation I DO NOT want anything planned....isnt vacation suppose to be a break from all the mundane things which make up your day to day life at home????..... plus we genuinely don't know what we want to eat or where we want to eat until the last minute..thats who we are and how we do things...so what should we do....make an arbitrary reservation just to be of "good breeding"??>..LOL.....and I have never gotten anything less than a big smile and a great table when we've entered a restaurant without ( GASP!! ) a reservation. so they certainly cannot be that upset with us coming in unannounced......

there are a lot of reasons to reserve or to not reserve but to imply it has to do with breeding is downright laughable...LOL

in light of the current thread on forum etiquette
I give you this

DISCLAIMER...I am not angry...this is way more funny than upsetting to me....no worries

Re: Newbie Info du Jour

I am in agreement with you MikeR. I go to SBH to relax and not be structured. If I want to linger a little longer on the beach, have another glass of wine before dressing for dinner, or enjoy any number of things that might arise, I don't want the thought of my reservation to infringe on my enjoying those moments. Otherwise, I would have gone on a cruise!!!!!! And that too, has its'
points. I consider myself pretty "well bred" and also know that my time is my own, especially when on vacation. I also know the risks of not having a reservation and could always come up with another option. Not like there are just a few restos on island. Also, having said that, I as well as you and Wendi, go off-season and that's a whole different ballgame...

Mike- you beast. Join me in the no social grace club- I think mine is #2 tho. :)

Re: Newbie Info du Jour

Nothing to do with breeding (LOL)I don't always reserve here in Canada
But it is definitely different in France-even far flung parts of it like SBH
Even if it's only 20 minutes before- we try to call
Not trying to be anal here- we often don't have a clue where we will eat until a few minutes before, either- but I really have to disagree with you on this one(don't worry , I still wear only shorts and take carry on!) - in St Barts, no matter when you do it, it is considered better to reserve.Don't you wonder about the funny looks you get when you show up announced?.Sure, you'll get a table, but it"s better to call first !

it's actually 'bad rearing ' (dogs are bred; children are reared)

just because you're on vacation is no reason to leave your manners at home! the people who own/manage restaurants are not on vacation. they should be treated with the same respect and courtesy. one would not show up to jean georges (nyc) or nola (new orleans) (just two of my favorites) without reservations!

FYI: the thread titled "is anything wrong with the forum" is keeping me from responding to mr. nap's quote!

Re: Newbie Info du Jour

Lloyd...you are not the one who put out that preposterous comment on reservations as they relate to ones breeding.....but thanks for the response anyway..

Lamb.....Wendi and I have to bend over backwards 24/7/365 for high maintenance tourists.....so if the worse thing a resort restaurant owner has to "deal' with is the disrespect and rudeness of us having the gaul of showing up to, God forbid, eat at their place without a reservation, in low season...I can assure you that person is still having a pretty good day...with a few more bucks in his/her pocket than they originally planned for....

I have no problem with reservations per se....I have two current reservations on hold right now this minute...one at the Borgata in two weeks...and one for my birthday in a month.....but on vacation we want no part of structure or planning whatsoever.....and if a restaurant cannot deal with that...we will go somewhere else...to date they've all coped with it very nicely.....

pbj...we re coming for lunch in two weeks.....can I get a reservation?????

i couldn't have said it better myself... the moral of this story is: don't be a high-maintenance tourist

Re: Newbie Info du Jour

Nice post. Good start!

We did the sign-up method at Au Port, but (doubting Thomas that I can be sometimes) I went back in the mid-afternoon when the door was open to confirm; when I was offered the option of taking a balcony table. So I would recommemd when signing up to write next to your name Balcone SVP!

The first time we went to Eddie's I walked in during the afternoon and asked to make reservations. The girl cleaning up around the bar wrote down my name and our requested time.

When we arrived that evening and said we had reservations, the staff just giggled and said we never take reservations! They seated us a few minutes later.

I wonder what that girl wrote my name on? ;-)
