Sad to report that Greg Iles passed away from a rare form of blood cancer. Many of his writings took place in Mississippi. I learned so much about Southerm history and southern behaviors. He will be missed.

His books were long, 600 pages plus. The pages overflowing with memorable characters and southern traditions. He could mix mystery, history, law and culture and I was usually sad to see them end.

Thanks for this note, Amy . . . residing now in “the South” (apart from “home“ on St. Barths!), I‘m sure that learning more about regional history & behaviors would be interesting.

Not familiar with this author. Living in SC now 20 yrs, born in NC, & living in GA when 5-7, I don't think of Mississippi as the south. We have many 'southern' authors in SC & very local to our Beaufort County( Bew fort), the late Pat Conroy for one.

Pat Conroy! I adored his works.

I was at a luncheon in Beaufort where local Southern writers often appear, surprised when Pat walked in with his wife who was a speaker, and only a few weeks later he was gone. He stopped to chat at each of the tables. Beloved in the lowcountry of SC.

I just stumbled across this post and am late to the game here, but I would highly recommend his Natchez Burning trilogy (second and third books are The Bone Tree & Mississippi Blood). One of those sets of books you wish you could have wiped from your mind to be able to go back and read again. Incredible writing weaving real events in history with fiction. Really great characters. I was enthralled and they are hard to put down. Being from the south many things in this book were quite familiar to me, but like Queen Amy said you'll learn a lot about "southern history and southern behaviors" for sure.

And with all due respect NancySC, I think Mississippi is about as "the south" as it gets!
