Hi! Where was the PLM Jean Bart Hotel that was in business in the 1980s? I’m curious and can’t find the address or what it is now anywhere on the internet. I know it was once the largest hotel on the island! Thanks in advance!

The PLM Jean Bart Hotel was in St Jean, I think where Les Jardins de St Jean apartments are now, up behind Sayolita and that row of stores...

PLM La Batelière on Martinique in 1980 was my first introduction to the French Caribbean along with a PLM on St Martin in 1981.. I loved those hotels! But did not know SBH also had a PLM. Great memories, so merci for the info!

Thank you so much! So it wasn’t a beachfront hotel? Did guests use the big St Jean beach or the smaller side where Nikki Beach is? I came across an old interview last night and Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley met in the bar of the PLM so I got very curious where it had been when I couldn’t find any information online.

Not sure if there was a bar at the Hotel . . . what I recall is that the nightclub was in the building that now houses the shops next to Sayolita. I suspect that was the scene of the subject “bar.” For a young guy in his 30s at the time, it was especially fun late night entertainmen.

Those were fun times when we were younger. And the older we get the faster time goes by.

I can't remember the exact year but we were staying at the long departed St Barts beach Hotel and the Sports Illustrated bathing suit models were there as well. This included Christie Brinkley and Rachel Hunter among many. Currently Le Barthelemy is on this plot.
Guy Turbe owned the original place and this is the time that Billy Joel and Christie met. Probably 42 tears ago.

Ah, the St Barts Beach Hotel. I never stayed there, and never met Christie, Billy, or the Swimsuit Models, but I loved the restaurant. It was the original Le Rivage, and I ate there a lot. It was my first introduction to Salade Pilou, which is now on the menu at Le Repaire, which is now run by Le Rivage’s original owner.

Our first year on St Barts and lunch at the St Barts Beach Hotel from the beach in our bathing suits.

We stayed there our first trip in 1985--and have been back every year since! After that, 2 years at Le Sereno (the old one) before finding our villa on Lorient Beach--long before the surfer shack. Great days from the good old ones to now--just different!

Anyone know if/when PLM was torn down? Or are the Les Jardins structures Ellen mentioned the same buildings repurposed?

Many years ago, Roy, a friend who we hadn’t yet met, stayed at the PLM Jean Bart. He wasn’t happy there and moved to one of the rooms at Autour du Rocher.

Later, in the mid-late 80’s, we tried to go to the night club at the PLM Jean Bart at about 10PM. We were the only people there, and didn’t stay more than 5 minutes. That was an early indication that SBH Night Life isn’t our thing, 😂.

It definitely was "late night" . . . not as late as Autour, but late. And fun and "clean," by which I don't mean drug-free. I never was into a drug scene on SBH, which is pretty remarkable for the 80s. But the PLM Club was, in my years there, scrubbed & buffed.
