Packing up for a move -- what to keep and what to pitch?

I have a one-word recommendation to friends who are doing a purge and moving.

Dumpster.

Now that we’ve moved, we need to do a 2nd purge to better fit our new home.

This could be many trips to Goodwill (oh so easy here) or another Dumpster.

We are using a service to move what we want and dispose of what we don't want via auction or donation. I actually thing we may have more storage in the new than the old! Not having a garage helps to eliminate a lot of "stuff".

We moved in April so know what you’re going through. Habitat and other organizations would not take anything if not located on the first floor and your kids don’t want any of your junk. Fortunately our local mover removed everything not wanted and did deliver some items to our children. Hopefully they were able to send some of the furniture to organizations and maybe get a few bucks for it They came back several days later for the move. Most importantly, you need a wife who can part with most of what you’ve accumulated

When we moved to California, we had given the good furniture to Habitat for Humanity. We also had a giant trailer dumpster parked on our driveway and filled it 3 times, not even counting the good donations ..and we still have at least 30 boxes of stuff I haven’t opened in 18 years🤪🤪..DD is not pleased, but it’s family stuff..a dilemma for sure as our son is not interested, as you observed! Moving is so difficult! Good luck with it all♥️

Are you moving to Florida, AKA SBHonline South. The parties are going to be awesome.

We were very lucky as the new owners of our home of 20 years also bought our furniture. It was still a marathon to get rid of 20 years of stuff, even with the gift of not having to deal with the furniture! We also filled three dumpsters, donated a zillion bags of nice clothing, and still have some stuff in storage 4 years later. It was very difficult process, but the feeling of lightness and freedom was a great reward! Good luck!

Yes, dumpsters are our friends. After donating everything possible and three daughters claimed their worldly goods, I had a long way to go, and a short time to get there. Smokey and the Bandit said that first. I had no heart for a tag sale so I had a barbecue. I put up one sign, come one come all! At the end of the day the house was empty, including my big freezer - turned out to be an eclectic bbq. I gave the freezer to a nice family who were so tickled they swept out the house. I moved to a beautiful condominium, from which, I believe, I can pack up and move from in 24 hours. Most of that time would be wrapping artwork. I was able to let so many things go thanks to something I read long ago - John Irving wrote "And never forget, there is memory.'

Enjoy your aerie ! quite the view. My great uncle had a cottage on the water in Nanjemoy that I visited years ago, thinking no longer a quiet little place like where he grew up with my grandfather in La Plata.
