The Wishing Well Restaurant

My lovely wife and I had a terrific time last night at the Wishing Well, where the only thing non West Indies is its unique name. This little place right on the road in Flamands is apparently new this year. I'll write of the experience by listing five reasons why the WW might not appeal to everyone.

Don't go if delicous West Indies cooking doesn't appeal to you. My wife, who is a fantastic cook with a highly refined sense of taste, declared her chicken colombo one of the best meals she's had on the island. Saturday is barbeque night, so I had grilled mahi mahi, which I thought was great, but we were also coveting the ribs and chicken we saw cooking on the grill. Both plates came with a large helping of a fantastic West Indies rice dish, and we topped it off with a banana flan for desert. There were salads and other dishes on the menu as well.

Don't go if you don't want to be in the company of St. Barth working people. We were the only Americans there and were entertained by a boisterous party of a dozen or so St. Barts who were obviously celebrating something. We never did determine the cause for the celebration - and maybe they had forgotten after trop de ti punch.

Don't go if you need to hear or see printed the english language. Our charming and attractive Guadeloupian serveuse spoke not a word of it, and it was quite refreshing to hear only french for a change. We think the proprietress may have spoken some english, but we didn't really inquire. Apparently take out is part of the business as we saw as many meals going out the gate as were being eaten on site.

Don't go if you'll be offended by the brightly colored plastic table cloths, flags, and Christmas lights that are the decor of this mostly open air establishment. Curiously, there was also an orchid growing in a pot in one of the large trees that provides shelter for the dining area. The whole place was meticulously clean.

Don't go if you can't enjoy an inexpensive dining experience. Our two meals and one desert cost 25 euros, and it was only with some creative drinking that we were able to run the tab up to 50 euros for the two of us. It's my understanding credit cards are not presently accepted.

On a personal note concerning yesterday -

UNC over Maryland - WOW!

Duke over Temple - Whew!

Re: The Wishing Well Restaurant

Tim,
Sounds like a throwback to another age in St. Barths, and that's a good thing!

Re: The Wishing Well Restaurant

JEK,
Throwback it is. If Nikki Beach is at one end of the spectrum, I'd say the WW is at the other. I seriously doubt one would find the normal patrons of the WW at Nikki Beach, but would one find patrons of Nikki Beach slumming at WW? Hmmm....

Re: The Wishing Well Restaurant

Tim...WOW!!!...you made my day.....maybe a harbinger of a trend???...maybe "we're" taking the island back"...ok..ok I know...... but I can dream cant I???.. but it all sounds fantastic...Wendi will be thrilled beyond words to only hear French...thats why she loved L"Entracte so much....well that and the pizza...and the menu sounds very good...and the prices sound great......we will be there....maybe even as our first night dinner...but where exactly is it???

and thanks for checking it out and reporting

and wow...UNC looks unstoppable right now

and what a great game Duke/Temple was to watch...two incredibly classy coaches...two great programs....going head to head

but the game of the day unquestionably was womens UConn/Tennesee.......I say it every single day at practice.....its all about free throws my friend

Re: The Wishing Well Restaurant

MikeR,

Can't miss it on the road down in Flamands. Look for the plastic flags in the daytime and the Christmas lights at night on the beach side of the road.

UNC may have put together their best effort ever yesterday. If Roy W hadn't pulled out the starters, the score could have easily been 125. What a performance!

I agree that Duke/Temple was fun to watch, and Duke was lucky to pull it out. Unless some of those white kids that've been sitting on the bench all this time can suddenly become players, I'm afraid Duke is going to have a rough year in the ACC. Of course they've lost four guys that could have started, but c'est la vie.

Re: The Wishing Well Restaurant

closer to Auberge...or closer to IDF???

and dont count out Duke just yet.....

Re: The Wishing Well Restaurant

Thanks Tim. It sounds great and we stay in the cottages owned by the Gumb family just above Flamands...very convenient.

Re: The Wishing Well Restaurant

Mike R,

I'm going to guess a little closer to IdF.

I'm not counting out Duke, but who's going to play the middle when Shelden Williams fouls out? They're almost playing with a center and four guards now. I'll still faithfully watch every game in which the signal isn't rained out. Oddly, I get almost as many ACC games on the television down here as I do in the U.S.

Speaking of being rained out, today is one of those cloudy, rainy days in St. Barthelemy that looks like it could linger a while. The plants are loving it, but the people(including me) are getting antsy.

Re: The Wishing Well Restaurant

Tim... you get lemons....make lemonade....playing 4 guards can create quite a few mismatchs if who they are playing cant match up position for position....I won 18 games in 97 with one center and 9 guards...no forwards.....I dont see it as an insurmountable problem at all.....but I do agree that the ACC is loaded this year and Duke will have to shoot from the behind the arc better then 35% every night to be competitive....heavy snow here...everyone is happy happy...now to football

Re: The Wishing Well Restaurant

MikeR,

You got that right. As long as J.J. and the boys are raining threes, they can get by with a lot in the middle. If they go cold on the threes - trouble, trouble, trouble.

Lolos and parades

S. Phil,

I hope you read Lauren's great explanation of the origin of the term "Lolo" in the other thread. I've visited Guadeloupe on several occasions, none of them recent. It's an exciting place, maybe too exciting for me, but a little dose like the WW I can really enjoy.

Thinking of Guadeloupe also reminds me to remind all visitors coming in the next few weeks that there is a parade in Gustavia every Sunday evening starting around 5:00 pm from now until Carnival. It's a somewhat informal affair compared to Carnival, but it's fun to watch and get in the spirit of things to come. It starts on the other side of the harbor and usually ends up in front of La Cantina. Check the local "News" if one wants to be in the proper color outfit to join the marchers. La couleur du jour aujourd'hui etait blanche avec rouge, mais normalment les couleurs changent chaque semaine.

If one doesn't want to dress up and march with the drummers, catch an early seat at La Cantina and drink till they arrive - almost as much fun.
