Question for the collective memory of the forum:

Did this open as Le Carl Gustaf? It was Le Carl Gustaf when we spent our honeymoon here in 2004. I was wondering when it was built and if it was something else prior?

Restaurant was also named VICTORIA back in the day. Our last meal there..BEEFBAR in 2023

The original Carl Gustaf opened in 1992 - Not in the 1970's as noted in the article John has linked to... even in the late 80s that hillside was virgin territory. Odd they didn't fact check...

Interesting issue, Ellen . . . my recollection would be of the Carl Gustaf opening in the late 80s, but it’s 35+ years ago — my memory betrays me at times. In Googling “when was the hotel Carl Gustaf built in St. Barths?”, the AI answer came back:
“Hotel Carl Gustav in St. Barths was originally built in 1975. The property has undergone several renovations and ownership changes since then, including a major renovation by the Barrière hotel group after they purchased it in 2015.
  • Original Construction: The hotel was built in 1975.”

1970s or 80s is not correct, I am certain the hotel was brand new when we got married in 1992. One of our guests from the States was a travel agent and had a "fam trip" she used the week of the wedding... the original owner was Jacques Laurent who owned PRB, a French building materials company, he loved the sea and sailing and PRB sponsored various sailors including Michel Desjoyeaux - who sailed to St Barth in the Transat AG2R - and Vincent Riou. Somewhere along the line someone must have posted the wrong info online and the AI sweepers swept it up.

And this is another case of the island's history being swept under the rug as the French invasion continues - Carl Gustaf was a local reference - Fouquet is a famous name in Paris - oddly the restaurant used to be Fouquet's then the Beefbar - will it now go back to Fouquet's?

I just solved the mystery - I googled "when did Jacques Laurent open the Carl Gustaf hotel?" and AI responded:
Jacques Laurent opened the Carl Gustaf Hotel in 1991. He was a businessman who built the five-star hotel in St. Barths.
  • Opened: 1991
  • Opened by: Jacques Laurent
  • Location: St. Barths

Great detective work!

This is one of the issues about AI. It synthesizes information that is on web sources. If there is something wrong in the source it gets summarized without reference to where the information came from. The AI response that Dennis got could have used the faulty information from the link that JEK provided. There’s a lot of bad information out there.

Yes, AI hallucinating is a huge and growing problem that might totally gut the technology, because of developing mistrust. And it's getting worse because everybody and their uncle is producing AI "something", most of which is garbage (or AI Slope as it is called in our IT parlance).
