Intruder

We had a first in our 20 years of trips to St. Barths this evening—an intruder at our villa. Most of our party had gone to dinner but one individual stayed behind. When that person went from one area of the villa to another they encountered an intruder on the walkway outside the bedroom doors who ran off. We’re staying in Grand cul de Sac. We notified the villa rental company who notified the gendarmerie and the villa manager although to minimal effect.

Just a reminder to use the safes in the villa and lock anything that has a lock. This intruder was not able to steal anything but certainly spooked us all.

Unfortunately, it’s a longtime problem at this time of year. As the season draws to a conclusion . . . .& many young people, who worked on the island in the past six months are preparing to leave, they need cash to move to the next locale (maybe St. Tropez?). Having spent, in entertainment, every Euro they earned, a small number of miscreants seek easy targets where they can lift easily-fenced items. Maybe jewelry, but more typically an electronic device. I’ve heard the stories many times. Fortunately, they’re not violent intruders.

most places are safe on the island. that being said....there are a few ne're-do-wells in this world who think life owes them something.

I remember years ago when I was renting one of the old gas mokes, I was with someone that used an insulin pump. he had purchased a waterproof insulin pump in the states ( they are expensive) so he could enjoy the water here. it was very small, about 4 inches long that attached to a port on his body. he kept the waterproof pump in a cooler in the front pocket of the cooler for easy access ( he only used the waterproof pump when he went swimming) we were going into a restaurant for lunch and parked the car alongside the street. I asked him to take the cooler. he refused and said its a safe island...who would take a cooler anyway? the cooler was gone when we came back from lunch, so he was not able to get in the water with his normal pump, which made the trip a little less fun. I am sure whoever took the cooler had no clue to what the device inside was and most likely tossed it.

always lock up your belongings. lock your doors in a rental villa, even at night when you are sleeping.... I have never had a problem in my home here, as it seems only the rental places get targeted.

Searching the archives, there were a spate of robberies back in 2006 and 2008. Refrigerators were even emptied out!
