Hiking to Natural Pools with kids

Ha! I don't think the socks would save you from the sting of the urchin. Not even sure if neoprene would. I was mostly joking about the previous teva fashion threads posted this Spring!

You might be able to sneak the socks on just before you head up the trail and off again when you hit the beach! you won't see too many people on the actual hike - just edit your feet from the photos and no one will be the wiser!

Despite that fact that we didn't swim the kids had fun. We knew about the urchins and that they might keep us out of the water.

Everyone loved the views. My son loved the different types of rocks. By the end of the walk they were tired and ready for a break.

Have a Great time!. Steve

Thanks, Steve! Sounds like a great adventure... One for the memory books... Jeff and I have always wanted to make this hike. It will be fun for the girls do discover this with us. Unless it is oppressively hot or very rainy this trip (or we all just get too lazy) we will give it a go!

Great pictures! Good for you and your little ones. They are beautiful and look determined on this hike. Lucky everyone.

Tevas and socks are a big joke in So Cal... one of the ways we spot tourists... they always seem to wear them with capri pants which is really interesting to say the least.

I wear white socks and flip flops all the time. Dressing for success has many meanings. Vanity isn't an issue.

Since we have a number of lawyers around here ;) - This is not medical advice, only a personal observation.

When going wading into waters I'm not sure about, I wear an old pair of Speedo water shoes (firm grip and solid mesh top.) Pack a couple "bandaids" and some antibiotic cream (readily available on SBH, don't bother packing fom home.) As Mike said, vinegar is a good cleanser, especially if in salt water. Carrying a small bottle of vinegar or peroxide (also improvised when "on isle") can help you clean things up quickly on site. After back to villa/hotel, wash thoroughly and apply another generous amount of antibiotic goop and slap on a "bandaid."

If prone to allergies, take a non-drowsy anithistamine before starting and carry an Epi-Pen and some Albuterol or similar emergency inhaler.

Should any serious discomfort or swelling continue - call a doc immediately.

In my experience, pulling out stingers of various sorts or jellyfish crud is worse than the bite.

Never, ever, stop exploring.

And, despite some protestations here, for airborne "biters" - DEET has worked for me for decades. Pick your poison.

Rosemary - how the heck do you walk in that combination?? I'm having trouble picturing it. You're definitely a maverick, going against fashion :)

It hurts!! I was stung in Jamaica years ago and the pain was excruciating. The staff at the villa knew about the vinegar treatment, but rum punch and a little Bob Seeger helped the most! Don't tempt fate. Best to leave those little guys to their hiding places.
