And it always has sand. But whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy does it matter?

Re: Questions from a first timer

While I enjoy Flamands for a change, I don't think it's as "WOW" as Saline and Gouvernour. The ocean colors aren't as vibrant (turquoise) and at Saline and Gouvernour, you've got the mountains/rocks surrounding you and the beach is high like a platform. I do like Flamands though for walking and its own qualities.

Cause a few of you have said that it is the BEST beach...wondering why since no one goes there

Ok...gotta work...will check back at lunch to see if anyone has come up with an answer why Flamands is always empty.

Re: Questions from a first timer

It's all subjective Mike. You answered your own question. It's great because nobody goes there.

Re: Questions from a first timer

so chdm... this thread has veered a bit off-topic. As for a recommendation on reasonably priced hotels, may I suggest an alternative that is somewhere between a hotel room and a villa? It's called L'etoile du marin, and it is advertised here on this site. It's a very comfortable apartment with one bedroom, an eat-in kitchen, a large bath and separate WC, and a great deck with a beautiful view over the harbor.

It is incredibly well-equipped with everything you could need for a vacation, including all the kitchen stuff, beach chairs, umbrella, coolers, cd player, even a cell phone for use on the island. The owners are wonderful and very friendly, and will give you all the insight you need to enjoy your first trip to the island. So, as with a hotel, you will have some support and a ready supply of answers to your questions.

The best thing is the price, it's 100 euros in low season, and only 165 euros (about $250) per night during high season. That's cheaper than many of the hotels that you mentioned, and offers a lot more space and privacy. It does not have a pool but we have not found that a hardship, since we spend our days on Flamands beach (4 minutes away). There is also a small beach frequented mostly by locals right down the hill from L'etoile, a 2 minute walk.

You can find info online at Etoile du Marin . Marie-Flore and Arnaud are the owners, and they are great. We're really looking forward to seeing them this Saturday; we're staying at L'etoile for 2 weeks, as we did last year.

Good luck with your search!

Re: Questions from a first timer

After Guests arrive our Villa Manager sends me a note. She wrote this couple from Dallas were kind of tired & grouchy from the flight, but glad to be on vacation, happy with the villa etc.---DID NOT want regular maid service---"just leave towels, we are neat (former military), don't worry about Jeff", snapped/apologised to her that they were not going to be on anyone's schedule this trip! Explained they both work at airlines crew/aircraft operations (demanding jobs---esp w/ weather) and rented a villa instead of a hotel so they would NOT have anyone stopping by..

So I called as usual a few days into their week and asked where they'd been to dine/beaches, everything OK? He, with a deep Texas accent said they had ONLY been to Flamands---used the car once when they shopped at Match, walked to IDF one night, LaLangooste another and just went down with the beach chairs to a nice spot on the plage daily, got other things at the local Boulangerie in Flamands and laughed that one of the women there even understood some of his wife's Cajun French--- said "we'll get to some others: Buddy, I'm paying for this one---I'm using it".

Jeff- that's exactly how I feel and if I have a villa on the beach I don't feel like going to another beach.

Re: Questions from a first timer

Flamands was the first beach we went to when we discovered St B.

I like the fact that you can get get food/drink from La Langouste and be right on the beach - they have those little Tiki tables - and you're not "sardined" in like at la Plage. Although I have to admit I do like to go to l la Plage, Nikki, and the beach bar at Do Brazil to watch all the activity!

Re: Questions from a first timer

There you go. Pretty simple. Thanks Jeff for that illustration of how anyone can get hooked on Flamands. The reason? If you have to ask... Well, go try it again.

Disclaimer: We also love Gov.

BINGO Finally we have a straight shooter.

I would hope people who have rented a villa on Flamands beach would enjoy being on that beach...

I agree with Howell on her reasoning too. And as JasB said...most would like a little activity on the beach...much like going to a restaurant...nobody likes to be the only one there....fun people watching.

not everybody.....but we are overstimulated with force fed people watching all year long.....so we have no interest in doing that on vacation

and you enjoy sitting in select for hours...hmmmm. Wouldn't think it would be too much fun drinking by yourself.....

Just having a little fun today...getting close to our trip and feeling excited.

Re: Questions from a first timer

Re: Questions from a first timer

Mike...yup..we do..and we love it....but most of our day is spent alone with each other - and away from everyone....we can save a whole lot of cash and stay right here in the resort we live and work in and get all that other stuff if we wanted it on vacation

Jeff.......I WILL be at Select and I WILL be consuming one of those little darlings.....one day aint gonna kill me....I hope...LOL

Since I will be there next week is there anything on the menu that is healthy?

Re: Questions from a first timer

When we were IDF folk, we did a day at the hotel beach chairs, followed by a day at Saline/Gouv, etc etc.

Only real issue @ Flamands is the January sun hides pretty quickly in the afternoon. Waves really not an issue IMHO, and it's fun to swim out to the point past Taiwana with a mask and snorkel...

Fave remains Saline, hike and all....it's the perfect beach, on the perfect island.
