Just picked up the book from Amazon. Really looking forward to it and recounting all the old lore. My family started going to SBH in 2000 together, but my godparents had all kinds of stories from as early as the 1980s from their adventures sailing that colored my childhood imagination. I will be on island again soon this fall and plan to dive into reading before my return.

You must mean the "down-market" people like me who hang around Pearl Beach. lol
My AI search came back with the — not surprising — response: “The choice to name the hotel Taïwana was primarily a stylized, exotic branding decision by its early founders, rather than a reflection of local West Indian history. Sounds about right, considering the time & source.
I’m on the same team — Pearl Beach isn’t inexpensive, but I think it’s fair value . . . with a menu offering broad attraction to diverse tastes. Management & servers also are great, in my experience — including being extremely accommodating to requests to “tweak” menu items for my GF & DF limitations.

If down-market means exhibiting good judgment and good taste, and declining to pay a premium to dine with people who lack both, then yes, that’s exactly what I mean. But then, de gustibus non disputandum est.
I'm getting very confused here! Pearl Beach . . . down market?
In a visit of 3 - 4 weeks, I often have lunch at Pearl Beach. In fact, I like it very much . . . as I've previously written. It can be a bit "price-y" for some items (langouste apparently being an example), but I find the restaurant to be one of the best island spots to spend a couple of hours at lunch with a favorite cocktail, perhaps a glass of Sancerre, a nice starter salad (mango, tomato, and avocado recently was refreshingly light, flavorful, and totally delightful!)
and an occasional "small" (as I always order) langouste with Black Pearl rice.
The venue, moreover, strikes me as one of the island's best luncheon spots . . . and not unreasonably priced compared to other favored, pricier restaurants.
Part of my pleasure in Pearl Beach, finally, comes in my enjoyment of the beach scene -- generally wholesome, sometimes charming, often playful . . . nothing down market in the views.
