We completed our 1st trip back since January 2020. Anita and I had a marvelous time. I only saw 1-mask the entire 8-days that we enjoyed on the Island, that person was ironically driving a car by themself, I believe it had DC license plates :)

Ahhh, the views which I have longed for 32-months

However, have a family trip that has been delayed since January 2021. Does anyone know when St. Maarten will cease the craziness of EHAS forms? Trandwind round trip for a party of (7) is $11,200.00.

The "craziness" of filling out a form that takes all of 5 minutes? I can do it in my sleep at this point.

There is the matter of testing if travelers are not fully vaccinated. Possibly this is the issue?

Sint Maarten has a stated intent to keep EHAS in place until it is replaced by some undefined Port Health Authority process, supposedly in October.

From a July 5, 2022 Government of Sint Maarten FB post:

** EHAS to give an immediate automated pre approval for vaccinated travelers as of August 1st **

As of August 1st 2022, the intention is to make EHAS more convenient by allowing vaccinated persons to receive an immediate pre approval, once the form is filled out in it’s entirety.

The entry requirements will not change for the country, but by allowing an automated immediate response, many cancellations can be avoided. It is important to note that the checks on arrival will still take place at the airport, and persons may be required to test locally if their documents are not valid.

Despite claims that EHAS is deterring tourists from visiting the country, statistics show that this is far from the truth. In the high season of 2021-2022, Sint Maarten was at approximately 120% of its 2019 pre-COVID arrival numbers and to date we are at 90% of the 2019 arrivals.

We often look at other countries without realizing the full measures being taken there. For instance, while Aruba may not require any testing to enter the country, they do require that an ED form be filled out prior to traveling and they still have a night life closure time of 1 AM during the week.

Even though America has finally eased their entry requirements, noncitizens are required to be vaccinated to enter their country. This shows that everyone is trying to find a balance that would also protect their population, while still attracting visitors.

Sint Maarten is no exception, the intention is for EHAS to transition into our Port Health Authority, which is mandatory for all the countries within the kingdom. An international health regulation (IHR) meeting was held last month in Aruba and is scheduled to be a yearly event. The IHR requires each country to be able to detect, assess, report, respond and stop outbreaks of infectious diseases before they spread internationally. This means that Sint Maarten must have a Port Health Authority at all points of entry, to meet our obligations as international ports.

"I am not someone that likes to remove regulations and then have to replace them later”. Said Ottley. The Minister is working on transitioning the EHAS to a more effective system that fosters safety without negatively affecting our visiting numbers. The plan is to allow this automated approval to be accessible for all visitors regardless of their vaccination status by October 15th 2022.

Kevin, is it clear to you from this if any testing will be required for either group (injected/non-injected) to transit thru SXM after this is initiated?

Sadly, no. My expectation is that, like now, vaxed passengers will not be required to test, but I have no clue as to what SXM may choose to require for other passengers. From time to time I look at Holland’s entry requirements, hoping for a clue as to what SXM may do, but beyond that my crystal ball is cloudy.

Kevin, thank you for all you do to keep us, all lovers of St Barths, well informed on changing travel requirements.

Dumb question, I have been trying to figure this out but the information on the SXM website is somewhat confusing. If you are vaxxed but not boosted do you still qualify as being vaccinated and don’t have to test to enter SXM?

By my reading, today, no testing is required for those who are fully vaccinated (+14 days) but not boosted. Requirements have changed over time. See #4 on the SXM EHAS Travel Requirements page.

Thank you for your reply.

I see #4….. but that verbiage in #3 regarding boosting which makes it very confusing. My family is has the v, but at this point I’m not sure we are sold on the b.

we have been looking forward to our November trip for years (yes, I know things can change) just looking to make sure I have my ducks in a row for when the time comes.

Thank you.

As of today, there are 85-countries that have no requirements for entry, just like pre-Covid. Hopefully, St. Maarten will get aligned with the other 85. I appreciate having the option of Tradewind, but it is very expensive in my humble opinion for a 211-mile short flight. Cost us more to fly the short distance on Tradewind than 1st class from Washington Dulles to San Juan non-stop 1,570-mile.

interestingly, we have upcoming air tickets transiting thru AMS with incoming US flight and outbound EU flight. information on Schiphol’s site and Dutch gov site both indicate requirement for special visa to “enter country”.
called Delta for clarification. They say all needed is thru ticket to EU destination and don’t leave airport. No test. No visa.
Sounds like SXM all alone with its testing requirement for transit only.
