Eating my way around the island

In the vein of places that have views of parking lots, good food and eating cheaply. I have been a big fan of Bouchon. Dinner last night. Bavette with a big bowl of pepper sauce. The steak was cooked a point. The frites likely were frozen but they were fried to a nice crisp texture. Perfect for dunking in the sauce. Marvelous.

I went to the new version of Les Bananiers. At lunch time it was busy.

This is the menu. It’s not the same. I was planning on having escargot. None to be seen. I ordered accras and the daily special which was duck confit. Not bothering posting pictures as I was disappointed. It wasn’t bad but it lacked the special touch the old version had. The presentation was also lacking. Food was okay. Service fine.

On the way out I ordered a pizza to go for my dinner tonight. Even though I was full I tried a slice. Happy to report that the pizza is still the same.

Feeling very lazy today. Didn’t go to a beach in the morning and instead went into Gustavia. Decided to check out Fish Corner. I guess one of the benefits of July low season is that reservations are not that necessary. There were only three other occupied tables. I had the cold half lobster and the best sweet potato fries. Trying to cut back on my drinking so a single glass of wine to accompany my lunch.

As I was finishing I chatted a bit with the couple next to me. It’s their first visit to the island and they were already dreaming about buying a house here. They’ve been bitten by the SBH bug. I’m sure there is no cure. All you can do is treat it.

No aroma. I recall more of an aroma by the Eden Rock around where the old channel that lead out from the salt pond. But that’s been covered over and fancified.
 
I have never been here late July before. I can feel the island slowing down. Today is Sunday. Around 1:00 I got in the car and began the hunt for lunch. Drove by Jojo which was open but I didn’t feel the need to go back there just yet again. Same with Bouchon. St Jean was mostly closed. Corossol dead. The sidewalks were practically taken up in Gustavia. I think I drove around the entire island. Sunday late July ain’t so great for lunch.

So plan B was put into action. I think the rose is popular with the forum.

You did fine, Mike. Express U or bakery for take away Sunday lunch could work too.

So glad to read this, Mike. The opening was a bit “rocky,” which made me sad for the lovely couple who have opened it. They opened quickly, however, without — IMO — adequate “preview” time to work out the “kinks.” I look forward to visiting there soon!

I think Mapo is a great addition to the island. Food was simple but good. The space is comfortable. I plan on trying it out for dinner later. Based on one visit so far I think its worth a visit.
