A spectacular accident occurred yesterday, Saturday, December 21, in the early evening in Anse des Cayes. A tender about fifteen meters long, affiliated with a yacht moored in the port of Gustavia, finished what must have been a crazy navigation on rocks, at the tip of the Anse des Cayes, on the side of the Anse des Lézards. Among the eleven occupants, of American nationality, six were transported to the Irénée de Bruyn Hospital, including a victim ejected from the boat when it touched the ground. Seriously injured in the face, she should be transferred by medical plane to Miami this Sunday. For his young comrades, no Sunday festivities on the program but auditions within the Saint-Barthélemy gendarmerie brigade.
A risky navigation
For the moment, no official voice has spoken to indicate the circumstances of the accident. On the other hand, the JSB was able to collect the testimonies of people who saw the tender and its occupants in the late afternoon in the Bay of Saint-Jean, at nightfall. Obviously, the party was in full swing among the small group of young tourists. The pilot of the boat was also in a playful mood since, on a video filmed from the beach of Saint-Jean, we can see the tender advancing in a jerky way, hitting buoys, to the sand. After recovering a passenger visibly forgotten on the spot, the ship painfully made a U-turn before swaying in the dark between the buoys and the boats and finally leaving the bay, propelled by its four engines. What happened next? This Sunday's hearings will undoubtedly provide explanations.
"A huge noise"
In any case, for a reason that remains to be elucidated, the person at the controls of the tender (who would be a member of the yacht's team, according to our information) ended up sending his ship to the rocks of the bay of Anse des Cayes. "I was at home and I heard a huge noise," explains a local resident. I thought two cars had collided. "
Quickly alerted, the Territorial Fire and Rescue Service intervened on the scene. About twenty firefighters are dispatched to the scene. In addition to the "classic" intervention vehicle, three Stis ambulances are also present. The gendarmerie also arrives as reinforcements, then the Smur (Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Structures). The boat being stranded nearly 250 meters from the road, it is on foot that the Stis teams must transport the equipment necessary to rescue the eleven occupants of the tender. Five were slightly injured but, as mentioned above, one of the passengers was ejected at the time of the boat's contact with the rocks. Her condition forces firefighters to shroud her in life equipment before carrying her at arm's length on a stretcher.
On the scene, many residents left their homes to observe the course of operations. Traffic having been blocked by the gendarmerie and the Stis, other residents are waiting to be able to leave the Anse des Lézards, on the one hand, or to be allowed to pass to return home, on the other. Sitting on a wall, the occupants of the injured tender, in bathing outfit, are disoriented, dazed, stunned. If the seriously injured victim is quickly transported to the Gustavia hospital, his fellow festivities remain on site for a long time. To find their minds but also to answer the questions of firefighters and gendarmes. It is the vehicle that is supposed to provide the shuttle service between Saint-Jean and La Pointe for the Christmas Village that is requisitioned to take care of the shipwrecked. An operation that was not completed before 10 p.m.
Hospital staff urgently recalled
At the hospital, where some of the teams were urgently recalled (to devote themselves to their task until more than one o'clock in the morning), the occupants of the stranded ship were subjected to alcohol and narcotics testing. However, according to our information, a person would have refused to undergo toxicological examinations. Details will be provided on this point in a future publication.
In addition, regarding the tender stranded on the rocks, no risk of pollution would have been noted. Consequently, his abduction is not of urgency. This operation must be carried out by its owner, after contacting his insurance. For the time being, the yacht to which the tender is affiliated is still moored in the port of Gustavia.
