Continuation of trip J2

Hi Amy! Happy New Year to you and Kelly!

Regarding "La Cantina" . . . davesmom & DD actually, as it appears from davesmom's note, are going to La Casina, the restaurant occupying the space that formerly was Zion & -- ancient history! -- Andy's Hideaway. It just opened late last October / early November. If you "Search" La Casina, you'll find some commentary . . . particularly my observations in its opening weeks (very positive!). It's very price-friendly for "locals," so attracts an energetic -- sometimes quite loud -- clientele, and music volume tends to grow as the evening passes. A fun crowd & ambiance, with very good food.
Just a quick note to say that we agree with everything you said..La Casina was one of the most fun and memorable nights we have ever had on SBH and I will do a full report tomorrow. (Still swooning over my lemon pasta!) So many good things to say and we were so welcomed and treated so well, we immediately reserved again for Sunday night! Couldn’t be a more worthy success to Andy’s..Will totally be our “go to” place for informal, totally affordable, and great food. 🥰👏👏👏👏😋

What a difference a night makes…our experience at La Casina could not have been more perfect with coincidences galore. First of all, what an exquisite little restaurant the owner has created; a breath of the Amalfi coast right here in SBH. A beautiful walk of green plants to the entry which made for a totally separate experience from the surrounding restaurants and stores. We were welcomed with caring and enthusiasm from the amazing manager with whom we ended up finding out that I used to live near him in France (of course he was not born yet 😂) and he just had worked at a very famous but small, elegant resort in the town where we live now, which we frequent often for our girlfriend’ birthday parties, so I showed him photos and it was like old home week. (Yes, we will get to the food 🤪!)

The restaurant has created an atmosphere of beauty with an enormous faux but gorgeous lemon tree to cover the ceiling with some candelabras (not real flames) on some of the larger tables but DD counted only about 12 tables plus a small bar area, so make a reservation asap as on a Wednesday night, they were full! We had a nice table with my back to the kitchen but we could peek at some of the dishes. It was a beehive of activity and it was all hands on deck, every server and worker handling all the tasks with good humor. The music was great, and lively with a fair amount of young people enjoying themselves enormously.

ok,this is just the appetizer we..gotta go to the beach..

Well, if there was a more perfect Gouverneur beach day, I can’t imagine what it would be. Practically no breeze, relatively placid water, a number of boats (not the good ones), and perfect temperature with no seaweed! We had a fabulous pique-nique à la plage, under the Guanahani provided chairs, umbrella, and yellow stripey towels..so easy since you just drop it all off. ( Make sure to take all of your trash with you as there are no barrels for trash.) Lunch was courtesy of Eden to Go (and my credit card), which for me might be the world’s best takeout for sandwiches and salads and paninis. No comparison with any other place, especially since we found the elusive raspberry tarte also there which was worth the price of admission..DD’s treasure hunt started and stopped right there. He had a classic Caesar with chicken and bacon..so boring, and I had this amazing sandwich of saucisson and cornichons with bread with what I am guessing were black sesame seeds but they were not at all strongly flavored. Mine was fantastic btw! A couple of Oranginas (omg, do you know how many calories are in Orangina??! Oh well. It is vacation..). So all together it was about 45 Euros not including the Orangina which we bought at Super U. (That is what you would expect to pay in San Diego, unless you were eating at In-N-Out, which is my favorite 🤪🤣). It was so much fun, we may do it again tomorrow but at Saline!

As promised, here is the Main Course, Le plat principal, of La Casina. (Doesn’t it drive you nuts when people call the main course in the US the “entrée”..but I digress..).
After a warm welcome, we consulted with the sommelier/manager about their reasonably priced wine list, but DD had chosen a nice Brunello we had had before chez nous, and I think DD said the wine list seemed to be a 2x markup, so no Chez Gus multiplier. ( We drink what we like, so we don’t always play matchy matchy with our wine and food. Don’t judge me; I just drink the stuff🤪!) We started with sharing an artichoke salad type thing, which was very good but we added a little more balsamic to zip it up a little. Then DD had his beloved Carbonara and before I could lookup, the bowl was clean. That is because I was super busy involved with my décor inspired lemon pasta, redolent of the Amalfi coast.

Ok, call me crazy, but as simple a dish as it was, lemon cream on pasta with zest, I was so busy paying attention to my happiness, I could not deal with his! Every bite was perfectly balanced and way too much for me to eat! I would share it with a partner if my partner hadn’t already consumed an entire bowl of Carbonara…no bread was served but that is probably a good thing. The whole menu was exactly what I had hoped it would be. The prices, as you have heard, were totally reasonable and I think our starter was about €24 (shared it) and my pasta was about €21 and I think the wine was about €115. There are pizzas for about €14 and great substantial dishes like Veal Milanese and Chicken Piccata, which I make at home, for about €30 plus something and la pièce de résistance was some pasta cooked in a giant wheel of parmesano cheese 41€, where they bring it to the table on a cart and everybody sings an Italian song I didn’t know and everybody clapped, kind of their version of “Sweet Caroline”, from what I can tell. So I looked up the words to the song, since I pretty much understand Italian, and then I sang along, because it happened a number of times, so you catch on, at least to the chorus! SO MUCH FUN!

They had great music to give a party (not sleazy for those who care) atmosphere, and everyone had a good time, and they surprised us with a Happy Anniversary bowl of ice cream, which was so thoughtful! (DD was happy to eat my part as I am technically allergic and I had overkilled on the pasta cream).

So after all the people rushing around, we start talking to the owner, Mimi, who apparently owns Le Piment, (seriously, those people have to quit the smoking over there), and if you ever wanted a new best friend, Mimi is IT! Could not be more adorable and she told us how this restaurant got started and she has been on the island for 45 years! Bravo, Mimi! Can’t wait to see them all on Sunday night, our last. Not sure if the pizza is good but they got this gigantesque pizza oven, which is BIG thing in San Diego, too (and lots of people have them built in the backyard but now would not be the time to light them..). So we will let you know. I will probably make DD have pizza to try it ( I am already calling “First Night” at La Casina, like the good old days of Andy, if we ever get back to SBH), but I may not be able to resist the lemon pasta…guess we will see! Buon Appetito!

You are on an roll, kids. Happy Anniversary. You found a new place treasure.

What a delightful evening! My mouth was watering reading your description of your lemon pasta dish, but I so love a good carbonara...my personal favorite. We'll definitely check La Casina out in April. Keep enjoying and celebrating! Where are you headed for dinner this evening?? Enquiring minds want to know! 😛

I have also heard that things at Chez Gus have gone downhill, unfortunately. We went last year when they were still fairly new and had a very pleasant evening, so this is sad to hear as it has such potential and the new decor is so nice. I thought I remembered that they have had a change in ownership since last year, so it sounds like some changes have been made and not for the better. Very excited to try La Casina this trip, many good reports so far!

Just a quick update since we might go for a little bit to Saline. Nikki for Saturdance later. Had a great dinner and cocktails at Sand Bar, but the service was not well organized and we got to know the manager who was adorable and did his Master’s degree in San Diego and worked at another resort near us..so many coincidences! But the inexperience of the staff was perhaps the reason? They can do better on the service. Had a fabulous lunch at Cantina, which is always great, informal, and well priced with an excellent chef. And a petite soirée meet up last night at L’ Esprit was so much fun! Of course the food was top notch and super inventive and that is why you go. (Amy, we know that is not the only reason YOU go😜😂😂) .

Breakfast continues to be a régale at Le G and I had something I have never even seen before..(you will not have either..). Will explain later and give food report!

Glad you appreciate my great taste in chefs. And you know his food is excellent too.

Ok,didn’t make it to Saline, maybe tomorrow but we are running out of time..went to visit a few friends in St-Jean at Le Drugstore and Original St Barth (Sandra) and found a really cute outfit and Sandra is a wonderful stylist and the clothes are very good value if you want some fun stuff that nobody else will have at home. So also decided to cancel La Guérite tomorrow as we got a better offer (!) and have to pack it up due to an earlier Winair flight 🙄.

We went to Nikki Beach for Saturdance and had a delicious lunch of Sexy Salad with crab and avocado, Sexy Sushi roll with somewhat similar composition, and crispy shrimp roll, with 3 mai tais, which were top notch. I’m a one and done kind of girl, but there were lots of the usual going on; loud music, people mostly sitting but some dancing on various things, very nice waitstaff. The saxophone player was wonderful and went around the room, working hard, too. You know what you are getting if you go to Nikki,
in a spectacular setting. This year, they moved the boutique off to the side, centered the DJ stand, and painted it up in this year’s characteristic color which is turquoise. I collect their fans so I got a new one! A senior citizen was celebrating her birthday in Nikki sequins (they lend costumes), dancing on the table. I’m doing that when I am 80 and that time isn’t so far off!
Next, as we were leaving, a guy and girl put on sequined costumes and rode a motorcycle across the restaurant..I kid you not. 19 years and I have never seen it. This is what you get to do for a big bottle of Dom…live it up, people..you never know!😂

Working backwards, we had dinner at L’Esprit last night where J-C always has surprises for your mouth! Bellini for me, a glass of red for DD, the little sister of a big name Bordeaux. Of course, I had to have my foie gras; it came with a little chutney thing on a piece of gingerbread for the season and although I don‘t usually like ginger anything, you need to trust J-C as he knows his business. Then I had some seared tuna with a spicy crust,( I’m not much on spicy crusts, so I kind of scraped off the spicy part..don’t tell him) and the polenta underneath was delicious, best ever! DD had a beautiful escargot dish in a pastry crust and some squid thing which creeped me out as I don‘t do squid or octopus, so I would not take a picture it in case I got nightmares..but he loved it. A little chocolate madeleine to end the evening!78708FDC-F119-4599-B79A-488768385AF9.jpeg626060CD-BEA8-43CA-9BBC-8D3D05C02E74.jpeg2FE77656-D08D-4878-AA61-EF2D72B333D8.jpegD8491181-1F7A-451E-A999-D0BA47739925.jpeg

Ok, let’s play Qu’est-ce que c’est? If you guessed the most exquisite raspberry croissant ever, you would be right! The pastry chef is a virtuoso and I have never even tasted anything like it. I will put in another, rather messy picture to show you the inside..I could cheat on my almond croissants every day with this one, but I’m not telling them..they would just get jealous, and I have enough problems with jealousy when certain pairs of shoes don’t make the trip, not to mention beach coverups..🤪🙄🙄

We enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Nikki on Friday. Was top notch food as always. The sax player was extremely talented, my favorite instrument. Had some good lung capacity. He rocked!!!!

😂. Ok, you can have a turn at the National Championship this year! Our year is almost up…GO BLUE!
Gina, I threw in the Buckeye cheer just for you. We make up an enthusiastic TEAM OF RIVALS.
