Cheap restaurants for those on a budget?

The ranch in Flamands has moved to Gouverneur, and is a riding school for locals. I don't know what is available in the way of rides, but I'm pretty certain that rides on the beach are not an option.

Good to know. We found their website but it was old and the email address on it didn't work, so that probably explains it. We'll have to dig in further. On previous vacations we've gone horseback riding (through the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, and on the ocean floor while the tide was out in Fundy park, New Brunswick) and it's one of our favourite vacation things to do. It's too bad that it perhaps is not available on St Barts anymore.

I'll make a plug for Eddy's for a nice meal that won't break the bank. The food is always good and the garden setting in Gustavia is unique and enchanting. If you're up for a full evening, plan to dine at Eddy's when there's music at BAZ. It can be a quick walk between the two, or a leisurely stroll around the harbor if it suits your mood.

Sounds lovely! I'll definitely look into that.

Happy Hour at the Cantina in Gustavia begins at 6:00 PM on Sunday evenings. You can buy a Tapas assortment and have a couple of drinks for 30 Euros or less. Don't go if you don't want to experience a locals scene.P.S. Bouchon provided a great, cheap dining experience a couple of weeks ago. I had one of the best pizzas ever.
I'am with Tim here! I pick up lunch for the villa here almost everyday!( Bouchon)

OK - so I have a bit of an opposite question. We are renting a house with a (obviously) kitchen and plan to cook most meals. We do however, want to splurge one night, leave the kids with a sitter and go somewhere great. Suggestions?

French, L'Esprit
Italian, L'Isola
Just so good you should go-Meat & Potatoes
One of a kind-Maya's

Yup, I'm Canadian, based out of Kitchener. I've been up to Ottawa quite a few times; I have both friends and relatives who live there.

And you spend half the year in St Barts? Now that sounds awesome.

Yes, even for a "fancy" meal, we were thinking more along the lines of the fixed price menu at the Wall House.

You will love it! We were on a small budget for one of our trips and made all our 'big night out' dinners be the prix fixe at several restaurants including Wall House. You won't feel like you're on a budget at all dining on their 35 euro menu! Also, you should check out their lunch package- a bit above your lunch budget but a total steal on the island at only 18 euro with all it includes (main course, beverage, cafe gourmand).

Thanks for the advice and encouragement! We're actually just as happy having our fancy meals out at lunch and our not so fancy meals be for supper (sounds like that may even be the cheaper way to go.)

They have pizzas in the 10-14 euro range, so it's doable, and I saw pictures somewhere recently of their specials board with specials all bieng around 10 euros, unless that was an old picture.

Well last week the specials were much pricier than that. There was a cote de boeuf for two at 60 euro and a veal dish for 26 euro IIRC on both days we went. Prices do seem higher with the new look. I love the new bench in the corner though. Had that table one evening. We went twice for dinner and the tab for the group of 5 with two bottles of wine, waters, apps and mains was about 300 euro both times. If you stick with the pizza, its much more reasonable. Compare that to one lunch at Taiwana on the afternoon we spent a Flammand. That was over 400 euro for 4. Ouch. But there are plenty of places to eat well without spending nearly as much. I love the Old School burger at JoJo. And even though La Gloriette is a bit more than 10 euro, its well worth the 20 euro or so a plate for a wonderful lunch on the beach.

Best idea is to go to the traiteur counter at Marche U and get some pate and charcuterie, gets some bread and wine and enjoy a meal al fresco.

I've watched their facebook page and the specials seem to be inexpensive, but maybe those are just lunch specials...

JGC, watch the Forum in the next couple of weeks for a fun and exciting contest, the winner of which will get free dinner for two at the Hideaway. You can't get any cheaper than that:up:

One of the best deals on the island for lunch is the Pink Parrot Bar on St. Jean Beach (sticks out in front of La Plage). Great Panninis for 12E and they are big enough for two people. Hard to find a lunch for 6E…… not to mention right on the beach and great people watching. However - when you add a bottle of wine, the price goes up!
