Despite a 2020 edition canceled due to health restrictions linked to Covid-19, the influx of campers to the beaches was not as high as expected during the Easter weekend.
Certainly, a few tents have sprung up on the sand here and there. However, the Easter weekend was not marked by the traditional scramble of campers to the beaches of the island. Blame it on health restrictions? Perhaps. But other explanations can be put forward. Like the departure for Saint-Martin from many Saint-Barths (read below) or the preference for more isolated campsites (coves, in particular). However, after being deprived of their long Easter weekend in 2020, the most relentless campers did not miss the appointment.
At Governor, it is impossible to miss the camp of Eva, Jérémy and Julien. It was put up at the entrance to the beach, under the trees. "Last year we weren't able to come because of the confinement, so now we do it until the end," smiles Julien. In fact, the small troop planted its stakes on Wednesday evening. Without being disturbed by other campers, almost absent.
“There is another tent on the beach,” explains Eva. They arrived Thursday morning! However, they didn't seem surprised at the low attendance. "At Gouverneur, it is quite calm every year," Jérémy assures us. There are no big parties. "And Julien to specify:" The gendarmes came by, they were very cool. Even they were amazed that there were not many people there. "
The Gouverneur campers, however, received messages from a few friends in Lorient or Salines who told them there was a "crowd". A finding that was not made by the gendarmerie, whose teams patrolled from beach to beach much of the weekend without noticing anything in particular. "People respected the recommendations and there was no overflow," said Captain Magniol.
"The wind, the rain, the Sargassum, the Covid, there are a lot of things that may have slowed people down a bit," remarks Julien. But there are also a lot of people who went to Saint-Martin. "A relative isolation that did not upset the group of friends who, in their canvas stronghold at Gouverneur, were able to savor all the rediscovered pleasures of a long weekend of camping.
