Bucket 2019 Preliminary Entry List

Wowzers, I missed the evolution of this thread.

I have sailed by Danneskjold several times and always thought the sail represented a swashbuckling joie de vivre spirit. Now that I know the ugly Atlas Shrugged reference, I'll never think of the yacht the same way.

We know a sailor who was on the Hetairos crew during the 2012 Bucket. It was not a happy week in his (and especially the owner's) life. That's when I learned Lloyd's of London had a $1 million deductible.

"I like to joke that if people really knew how others live on superyachts, they’d bring back the guillotine.” - Bill Duker, original owner of the recently sold (asking price was €88,000,000) 70m (230 foot) sailing yacht Sybaris as quoted here. A bit about Mr. Duker can be found here and some of how it is said that even prison was not able to keep him down can be found here and much more by googling... it has been suggested that some recent work has a Sybaris connection...

Sybaris was briefly listed in the preliminary Bucket enties for 2017, her first sailing season, but withdrew months before the regatta... I know that Perini Navi would like to have this yacht in the Bucket - perhaps the new owner will choose to oblige the builder and show off the new toy in 2019...

A bit about the name Sybaris and its relationship to "opulent luxury and outrageous pleasure-seeking" is found here.

Regarding Danneskjold, a regular participant that is not yet listed for 2019, the spinnaker shows the Atlas Shrugged connection:

That Atlas Shrugged spinnaker is a huge turn-off, although Rand would be delighted. So, we're down to 33 entries for March. Surprisingly, only seven more than the post-Irma Bucket. I don't recognize a few of the entries from prior years.

I see you are a Sox fan. On occasion, we get one of the Bucket yachts gracing the Seaport during the summer.

There will be gains and losses, most years a net gain, last year a net loss.

Regarding the more recognizable preliminary entries, it is good to see that Adela is listed to return after missing 2018... a good story and an understandable favorite for many.

Additions and subtractions to the initial list but the total remains at 33 on the December 8 update.

One addition is schooner "royalty". Columbia (43m, 141 feet) is a recent replica of a fabled Gloucester fishing schooner that was launched in 1923.

A bit of the stories of the original and the replica can be found here and footage of the original's contentious race with the iconic Canadian schooner Bluenose can be viewed here.

The replicas of Columbia and Bluenose participated in the 2018 Gloucester Schooner Festival.

The original Columbia was short lived. She went down off Sable Island with all 22 crew, mostly Nova Scotians, during the Great Gale (Hurricane) of 1927. Among those that do business in great water who were lost was 17 year old Alistair Firth, a reluctant crew member whose father (also on board) insisted he come.

Nova Scotian families received monthly compensation checks. Newfoundland families did not receive assistance until an Anglican minister arranged payments of $100 per year (equivalent to about $1500 today) to each family who suffered a loss.

The replica Columbia is listed for sale at $18,900,000.
