We had not been back in over a year. Last time had been very busy and the food and service felt off. The music volume is generally much lower during the early seating. Weekdays in low season/slower time of year can be relatively mellow, esp on a less than perfect weather day like yesterday. It’s not a “visit every trip” for us. I understand the concerns mentioned —we work around them as we like the menu and love the view.I have similar feelings about NAO as Dennis. I used to go there each visit, but the music became so loud that one could not even carry a conversation sitting across from each other at a small 2-person table. Not my style. I asked if the DJ could lower the volume and response was NO. So I stopped giving them my business.
Very happy that you found Nao to be "very quiet!" I stopped going there about a year ago because (a) the DJ's music was defeaning and (b) when I asked if he could turn the volume down a bit, he said "if you don't like it, maybe you should go down to Nikki Beach!"). They obviously don't need my business.
Remember when we went years ago right after they opened, and it was pouring rain so we were literally the only table in the restaurant, and yet the DJ was still blasting the music so loud we couldn't talk amongst our group? Yea and while Flamands is nice and clear there are several clusters of sargassum moving in. This is bad news but I’m gonna check er out in the morning to see if maybe the current kept it going by.Sorry to report: yesterday afternoon I walked to Gouverneur—it was completely covered with sargassum both on beach and in water. We had very heavy rains overnigt Walked down again this morning, wondering it the storms had any effect. Sadly not. It’s still covered with more coming in.

. . . jumping into this exchange, I would say that -- for me -- the patrons in restaurants that I visit can (& do) run the gamut from island workers (many of whom are personal friends) to well-heeled, jet-setting folks (young & old). Apart from the matter of quality of food & refreshments, my pleasure in being in a restaurant is found in its "vibe" and the enjoyment found in dining and talking with friends.I don't know... would you be OK with sitting next to the well-heeled, jet-setting younger generation?
These all sound good to me, Dennis. . . jumping into this exchange, I would say that -- for me -- the patrons in restaurants that I visit can (& do) run the gamut from island workers (many of whom are personal friends) to well-heeled, jet-setting folks (young & old). Apart from the matter of quality of food & refreshments, my pleasure in being in a restaurant is found in its "vibe" and the enjoyment found in dining and talking with friends.
The vibe aspect is a matter of many factors, including professional, friendly, courteous staff . . . well mannered patrons who respect others (staff & guests) . . . respectful phone usage . . . music at a decibel level which doesn't impair conversation . . . comfortable seating . . . clean restrooms . . . small gestures (a waiter who remembers my cocktail preference) . . . a thoughtful extra (e.g., a glass of vanilla rhum at the end of a meal).
Heard from reliable source last evening that swimming in the waters on Nikki Beach is not advisable for a few days. Apparently that part of the beach gets all the rain run off from the hills above St. Jean and Tuesday night there was a deluge of rain.
