ATM's and fees

What happens in cases like PeterdLynn described the ATM owning bank converts your Euros to USD at offered rare (knowing that the checking account owners are US based) and then covert them back using the market rate collecting their slice on both. The result of course is terrible for the customer but good for them. Refusing that rare forces the ATM owning bank to give Euros from the customer Euros balance and only charge the ATM fee (if any). In case of the USD account being the source for the transaction there will be a single conversion with the banks Fx rate which most likely includes their slice over the retail exchange rate plus possibly fx fee and plus ATM fee.

Checked out the BNP and voilà. No fees at all. Didn't even know the center was back there. Awful road though.

I have a Capital One 360 checking account. I use the BNP. No conversion fee and no ATM fee.
Great to know. I also use Cap360. I had an issue with an ATM at gas station next to airport last trip. Granted, it was a while ago. But- this is v helpful.

No. I'm using our Fidelity debit card tied to our taxable account. I just checked the account and 1.16.
The rate should be spot rate or go elsewhere.
It’s a question of fee charged by your bank and atm bank.
As far as I’m aware Fidelity not in global alliance network with BNP 🤷‍♂️

We have a Charles Schwab account, and they reimburse you at the end of the month for any ATM fees that you were charged. We’ve it for a few years now and it works great in the Islands and Europe. In Marigot in St Martin the ATM does not charge a fee and you decline the ATM exchange rate. It’s been a while since we’ve used in SBH as we get our Euros in St Martin before going to SBH .

Fidelity does the same. We had a couple of charges in Nice and had to scan the receipts for reimbursement. Rather not have to deal with that, so found the caisse d'épargne and stuck with it.
