Engadget reports that Apple has issued media invitations for a special event to be held on Wednesday, September 1st in San Francisco. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Pacific Time and be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the traditional location for Apple's fall media events.

Apple is expected to introduce updates to its iPod lines, including a FaceTime-enabled iPod touch. The company is also rumored to be introducing a significantly redesigned $99 Apple TV device, possibly renamed "iTV", as well as 99-cent TV show rentals.

Just yesterday, Bloomberg had claimed that the event would be on Tuesday, September 7th.

Gotta give their PR guys credit for creativity what the significance of the guitar though for iTv

Music. Music is the secret sauce. Without iTunes there would be no iPod or iPad or even iPhone.

Apple's potential Web-based iTunes will be 'social, not streaming'

Apple may reveal a "big overhaul" of its iTunes Music Store next week, likely to be a lightweight Web version, but the service will not be updated to allow users to stream their content from the cloud, music executives have said.

Peter Kafka of Media Memo spoke with music executives who indicated that Apple has not yet approached the largest labels to obtain the necessary licenses for offering streaming content. Executives, however, said they do expect iTunes to be overhauled, even without a streaming service, and the new iTunes could be unveiled at next Wednesday's event. He said users should "think social, not streaming."

"Apple plays its cards close to the vest even with the music labels it works with, so the people I've talked to are making informed guesses," Kafka said. "That said, music sources tell me they're expecting a lightweight, Web-based version of the iTunes store. The new version would be designed to sync up easily with the rest o the Internet and make it much easier for customers to share their musical tastes (but not songs) with friends."

Executives said they believe a Web-based version will allow buyers to purchase content through the Web-based version. It could also offer easier integration for services like Twitter and Facebook, allowing users to link to the store and share playlists, songs and albums.

"Some label executives also speculate about a wireless system that makes it easier for you to manage iTunes purchases," he wrote. "In theory, Apple could make it possible for you to move a copy of a song you bought on your iPhone onto your laptop without having to manually connect the two devices."

While Apple's current contracts do offer it the ability to add features like wireless syncing of purchases on up to five devices at a time, they do not have the necessary deals to offer a cloud-based streaming service. Kafka said it's "possible, but not probable" that the company could go ahead and launch such a service without the necessary deals from record companies.

Apple first began migrating iTunes to the cloud last November, when it quietly launched iTunes Preview. The Web-based service allows users to view iTunes content without launching Apple's desktop media management application. Subsequent updates have brought about browser-based song sampling and the ability to view App Store software.

There was an App that enabled iPhone to sync with the iTunes wirelessly. Didn't pass the Big Brother control.

The Non-Apple world is just wondering why it's not yet done, it's pretty annoying to connect the USB cable to the machine somewhere when the phone could sync just fine while sitting on the kitchen table, through wifi. I would love to sync the iPod in the car through wi-fi instead of actually taking the iPod out from the car.

Apple Preps Yerba Buena for September 1st Media Event

Apple has started prepping the Yerba Buena center for their upcoming media event next week. (via Wired / 9to5) The building-sized banner reflects the same guitar artwork that was printed on the media invitation sent out earlier this week.

The reason for the image has been the subject of much speculation on our forums. Apple has been rumored to be releasing new iPods, TV rental service, new Apple TV, iLife and more at the event. The event kicks off at 10am Pacific on September 1st.

I was just wondering if I should put our two iPod Nano's for sale :D But I'll wait and see what comes..

While waiting for the real estate miracle to happen, I've cleaned the basement a bit. It's amazing how much money some pieces can get from the auction site, 125 euros for the first generation Apple TV. 416 euros for the first generation PS3 with PSP (I mainly wanted to upgrade the PS3 to the slim model, and decided that's a good way to get rid of the PSP as well), an old Roomba cleaning "robot" for 153 euros. All the generic PC bonk, from PC chases to ISDN phones and old DVD player, I got an student to pick them up and give a bottle of NZ sparking wine -- saved the me trouble of going to the recycling yard.

Feels great to not have so much stuff around!

More Claims of Smaller, Square iPod Nano Next Week, Along With Possible 3G iPod Touch and iLife

Mockup comparing possible next-generation iPod nano form factor to 2nd-generation model

AppleInsider offers new claims of a significant redesign of the iPod nano scheduled for release at next week's media event, lending additional weight to the square cases and earlier rumors associated with the device.
People familiar with the matter indicated that the size and shape of the device, revealed this week through photos of third-party cases, will be more akin to the iPod shuffle than the current-generation iPod nano. Even with this small size, however, it is expected to have a traditional iPod dock connector, allowing compatibility with the existing iPod accessory ecosystem.

The new iPod nano is said to utilize a tiny 3cm-by-3cm display that was revealed in its bare form as unknown Apple-branded component earlier this summer. For comparison, the second-generation iPod nano had a screen that was about 3cm by 2.5cm.

In addition to the iPod nano, the report notes that Apple has been toying with plans to release a version of the iPod touch offering 3G cellular data access. The company is said to have begun seriously considering the idea after seeing the success of the 3G-capable version of the iPad released earlier this year, and prototypes of 3G-capable iPod touches are claimed to be in existence.

Finally, rumors of an update to Apple's iLife suite persist, with today's report suggesting that a portion of next week's media event might be devoted to a new version of Apple's multimedia suite. With Apple having moved to an approximately 18-month release cycle over the last few versions of iLife and the current version having been released in early 2009, an update in the near future would be a reasonable guess. One claim from late last month predicted an August 17th release for "iLife '11", which is rumored to see the discontinuation of iDVD, a significant revamp of iWeb, and a new "mystery" application. The claimed release did not, however, occur on the predicted date.
