'86 Ch. Haut-Brion

I love great wines with simple food and ordinary occasions. Like '86 Ch. Haut-Brion with Sunday night family dinner of steak-frites.
For me, Bordeaux, even great Bordeaux in great years, often disappoints. Not this time. Classic cigar box nose. Beautiful balance and mouthfeel. Tannins aplenty. Especially for a 26 year old wine. Bien satisfaisant !

I agree. That is not your run of the mill Sunday night bottle. I used to have some mid to late 80's Bordeaux in my cellar, but I confess to opening them for various occasions. Most were excellent, particularly some Saint Emilions, and they didn't require a second mortgage on the house.

Where did you acquire and when did you acquire such a fine drop?

Probably around release date more or less. Good Bordeaux can be had through our local purveyors. Your beloved Burgundies, on the other hand, are like front row tickets to a Stones concert. In that era I mainly acquired them through MacArthur's in your neck of the woods. Mark Wessels there was a homeboy.

At that time a friend and I ran the local chapter of the now defunct Les Amis du Vin. We would have dedicated a monthly tasting to the '86 Bordeaux release. Might even have had the late Harry Waugh as guest speaker for that one??? Good old days...
